Deshaun Watson Returns, Amari Cooper Absent

Quarterback Deshaun Watson ramped up his practice activities during the Cleveland Browns’ minicamp on Tuesday, but noticeably absent was top wide receiver Amari Cooper, who did not attend the mandatory session due to an unexcused absence, according to head coach Kevin Stefanski. As a result, Cooper faces potential fines from the team.

Cooper, a five-time Pro Bowler, is in the final year of his contract, which will void after the 2024 season. His current contract accounts for $23.8 million against the 2024 salary cap. While Stefanski acknowledged ongoing discussions about a contract extension, no agreements have been reached.

Despite missing Watson for much of last season, Cooper had a strong 2023, recording 72 receptions for 1,250 yards and five touchdowns. As he approaches his 30th birthday next week, his absence from minicamp highlights the ongoing contract negotiations.

“Amari is our teammate, our brother,” Watson commented after practice. “We support him in the decisions he has to make.”

In the meantime, Watson participated in seven-on-seven drills for the first time since his season-ending shoulder injury last year. He remains uncertain if he’ll be fully cleared by training camp and if he’ll continue throwing daily during OTAs. Watson emphasized taking it “one day at a time” and relying on his medical team’s guidance.

Watson expressed confidence in his recovery, stating he feels “very, very comfortable” throwing and believes he’s in the “right position” to be healthy.
