Since the start of the 49ers training camp on July 15th, one rookie has been turning heads and making a significant impact: undrafted free agent running back Cody Schrader. Schrader’s standout practice performances have highlighted his potential and are making him a near lock to make the 53-man roster.
Schrader’s journey to the NFL is as inspiring as it is unconventional. Transferring from a Division II school, Schrader walked on at the University of Missouri, determined to prove himself at the highest level of college football. Not only did he earn a spot on the team, but he also set an SEC rushing record, amassing 1,627 yards and 14 touchdowns in just 13 games last season, leading Mizzou to the Cotton Bowl and a 14-3 victory over Ohio State.
At 5’8″, Schrader is two inches shorter than the average NFL running back, but his powerful legs and decisive running style make him a perfect fit for the 49ers’ blocking scheme. During his senior season at Mizzou, his vision and ability to slice through gaps and bounce off defenders like a pinball were evident. He runs with the power of a truck and is incredibly hard to take down, making him a formidable presence during training camp.
While the 49ers’ rookies have faced their fair share of injuries, with Ricky Pearsall and Isaac Guerendo sidelined, Schrader stands out not just for his performance but for his poise and readiness. Schrader consistently delivers big plays both as a runner and a receiver.
Schrader’s story is a testament to his talent and grit. His ability to adapt and excel at every level makes him one to watch as the preseason progresses. If his current trajectory continues, expect Cody Schrader to not only make the 53-man roster but also become a key player for the 49ers this season. This aligns with Head Coach Kyle Shanahan’s statement that they are going to preserve starting running back Christian McCaffrey’s health, and with backup running back Elijah Mitchell struggling to stay healthy, we could realistically see Schrader work his way up the depth chart and take on a significant role with the team.
The 49ers kick off the preseason on the road against the Titans on August 10th at 7 PM EST. Look for Schrader to make his mark.
