Purdy continues MVP surge as 49ers survive persistent Cardinals

A divisional matchup in Santa Clara saw the San Francisco 49ers host the Arizona Cardinals, with both teams looking to make an early statement in an NFC West division that already appears to be shaping up as one of the league’s most competitive.

San Francisco entered the afternoon unbeaten at 2-0, while Arizona came in at 1-1. The 49ers wasted no time time in showing why they had started the season so strongly, opening the scoring with one of the more creative touchdowns you will see all season.

Kyle Shanahan dug deep into his playbook on just the third play from scrimmage, with Brock Purdy finding Mike Evans before the veteran wide receiver lateraled to Deebo Samuel Sr, who did the rest, sprinting 80 yards for a touchdown. The unusual play was officially scored as an 82-yard touchdown pass from Purdy.

The Cardinals struggled to generate much offensively in response, and the 49ers took advantage. Purdy soon found Evans again, this time for a conventional 23-yard touchdown of his own, giving the home side a commanding 14-0 lead.

Arizona finally got on the board with a pair of field goals from Chad Ryland, but a 57-yarder from Eddy Pineiro then gave the 49ers a 17-6 advantage heading into the main break.

The Cardinals desperately needed a response coming out of halftime, but it was San Francisco who struck again through Christian McCaffrey, who continued to make his presence felt, while the 49ers’ offense repeatedly found ways to create explosive plays despite limited time in possession.

Arizona eventually began chipping away at the deficit. Jacoby Brissett connected with Michael Wilson for a five-yard touchdown, before Jeremiyah Love added another score through the air to bring the Cardinals back into the contest.

Suddenly, what had looked like a comfortable San Francisco victory had become a genuine fourth-quarter fight in The Bay.

Purdy, as he has done all season to date, had an answer. The 49ers quarterback found George Kittle for a 10-yard touchdown, giving his team some breathing room before Brissett scrambled into the end zone for a rare rushing touchdown to bring Arizona back within a field goal.

With the Cardinals refusing to go away, San Francisco once again turned to its star tight end. Purdy delivered yet another perfectly placed 20-yard touchdown pass to Kittle with just 97 seconds remaining, extending the lead and putting the game beyond Arizona’s reach.

Brissett still managed to lead one final scoring drive, finding Wilson for 18 yards before Ryland drilled a 49-yard field goal with 39 seconds remaining. Arizona attempted an onside kick, but Samuel Sr. recovered it, allowing Purdy to kneel out the dying seconds.

The Cardinals deserve plenty of credit for making San Francisco work for it, particularly after falling 23-6 behind. But the 49ers ultimately had too much firepower, with Purdy throwing four touchdowns and Kittle hauling in a pair as San Francisco moved to 3-0, giving them outright control of the NFC West.
