Roger Craig Reveals Vascular Dementia Diagnosis

49ers legend Roger Craig revealed during his Pro Football Hall of Fame induction that he has been diagnosed with vascular dementia.

Craig, 66, said his doctors believe the diagnosis may be connected to the concussions he sustained throughout his football career.

“My doctors believe may be related, at least in part, to the concussions I experienced during my career,” Craig said. “The changes were gradual. At first, they were easy to dismiss as normal aging. Over time, my family noticed it too and ultimately led us to seek answers from my doctor.”

“I want people to know this diagnosis doesn’t define me. I am still Roger Craig. I am still a father, a husband, a teammate, a friend and someone who loves this game and the people who brought it to my life.”

The announcement came during a long-awaited weekend in Canton for Craig, who waited 28 years after becoming eligible before finally receiving his gold jacket.

Craig ended his speech by hoping that sharing his diagnosis could help other former players and families recognize when something isn’t right and seek medical help.

“If sharing my story helps even one family or one former player, then it’s worth it. Football gave me everything.”
