Shomari Lawrence Gets His Revenge Against FIU

Missouri State’s Shomari Lawrence couldn’t have asked for a better stage than a weekday C-USA matchup for this statement game. Facing his former team, the FIU Panthers, in the schools’ first-ever matchup, the senior running back ensured his presence was felt early on and stole any remaining hope from the Panthers in the second half. Lawrence finished with 14 carries for 104 yards and 2 TDs, his first multi-scoring game, as Missouri State left with a 28-21 win and ended October undefeated.

Lawrence transferred from FIU in January and has quickly established himself as Missouri State’s lead rusher. On the team’s third drive, he powered in for a 3-yard touchdown, and from that moment on, it was clear this game belonged to him.

The offensive line seemed to know how much this one meant to Shomari. Time and time again, they controlled the trenches, opening lanes that allowed him to get to the edge and wear down the Panthers’ defense. One of his biggest moments came on the sixth offensive drive, after starting 2-for-6 on third-down conversions, the Bears made key adjustments, freeing Lawrence for a 41-yard touchdown burst that shifted momentum and froze the air inside the stadium.

Then came the knockout blow in the fourth quarter. After a tense back-and-forth that included a costly Missouri State penalty following a 38-yard trick play recovered by FIU, the Panthers had a chance to claw back. But when the Bears needed a response, Shomari delivered again, breaking loose for a 42-yard beast mode run, sealing his statement night and recording his most rushing yards in a game since August 2023 against Louisiana Tech.

In the postgame presser, Lawrence said his past with FIU is behind him and that he’s proud to call himself a Bear. He added that he was looking for a home to grow both on and off the field and praised head coach Ryan Beard for his leadership and the culture he’s building in Springfield, saying he’s become a better player since arriving at Missouri State.

Head coach Ryan Beard praised his running back postgame, saying this win is a culture win and illustrates their resilience. “I don’t care whoever we’re playing against, he’s a hell of a back. He’s got great vision, he’s got great power, he has breakaway speed … Obviously it’s sweeter coming from his old school.”

Lawrence’s blend of power, patience, and energy has quickly made him one of the focal points of the Bears’ offense. Through the previous four games, Lawrence has had double-digit carries, taking full advantage of the opportunity and Beard’s trust. More importantly, his performance against FIU showed how much growth he’s made since leaving Miami, both as a player and a leader.

For Lawrence, it wasn’t just a win, it was personal closure. And based on how he ran, it’s clear he’s found the perfect home in Springfield.
