Patriots Sign Christian Gonzalez to 4-Year, $135M Extension
New England is locking up Christian Gonzalez as the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
The Patriots and All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez have agreed to a 4-year, $135M contract extension with $102M guaranteed, the team announced.
The deal carries an average value of $33.75M per year, making Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history, surpassing the 4-year, $132M extension Devon Witherspoon recently signed with Seattle.
Gonzalez also received a $33M signing bonus, the largest ever given to a cornerback.
The agreement comes just one day before New England opens the 2026 regular season against the Seahawks on Wednesday night. Gonzalez had been seeking a long-term extension throughout the offseason, and the two sides ultimately took negotiations right up to the start of the season.
Just hours before the agreement, there were still questions surrounding how close the two sides were to getting a deal done. Now, Gonzalez can turn his full attention toward Week 1 and a rematch with Seahawks WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
Gonzalez, the No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2024 before making the Pro Bowl in 2025.
Last season, the 24-year-old recorded 10 passes defensed across 14 regular-season games. He added 7 passes defensed, an interception and a forced fumble during New England’s four-game postseason run.
Gonzalez also played a major role in limiting Smith-Njigba during Super Bowl LX. Seattle’s star receiver finished with just 4 receptions for 27 yards, with Gonzalez allowing only one reception while in coverage against him.
