Bengals’ defensive domination leads victory over Buccs

Both on the back of failed 2025 campaigns, the Bengals and Buccaneers entered the year with ambitions of their respective division titles at the least, with this providing either team, particularly Tampa Bay on the road, a chance to put their rivals on notice as a genuine threat.

Joe Burrow entered his 7^th season looking to lead Cincinnati back into playoff contention after an injury-riddled 2025 campaign, while Baker Mayfield was beginning a new season in Tampa Bay after recently agreeing to a three-year extension. Mayfield also carried an intriguing piece of history into Cincinnati, having won all three of his previous starts against Burrow. With plenty of pre-season hype around the Bengals’ high-octane offense and Tampa Bay entering the season with a healthier offense themselves, the stage was set for an intriguing battle between two teams desperate for a fast start.

Though it was Tampa Bay who scored first through a Chase McLaughlin field goal, the revamped Bengals defense wasted no time making an impact, as Myles Murphy stripped Mayfield to set up a scoop and score for Demetrius Knight Jr.

Lightning struck twice shortly after, as Bucky Irving fumbled in Tampa Bay territory. This time it was free agent signings Bryan Cook and Boye Mafe combining for the takeaway. Just like that, Mike Gesicki had found the endzone and the Bengals led 14-3.

Perhaps unsurprisingly by now, despite finally gaining some momentum and finding themselves in the red zone for the first time, a 3^rd successive Tampa Bay drive ended in a fumble, Mayfield’s 2^nd of the day. Not given prime field position this time, it didn’t matter for the Bengals offense, who consistently moved the chains, with Chase Brown eventually running it in for their 3^rd touchdown of the afternoon.

At last getting some reward for their hard work, Irving held on to the ball this time to arrest the momentum and gain some respectability on the scoreboard, trailing 24-10 by the end of the half.

After the teams went field-goal for field-goal to consume most of the 3^rd period, with Cincinnati seemingly doing enough to remain in control, the game changed instantly when highly touted rookie linebacker Josiah Trotter, who had already recorded a sack, picked off Joe Burrow and took it to the house, halving the deficit in an instant.

A 58-yard field goal from Evan McPherson extended the lead back out to 2 scores, before a 4^th Tampa Bay fumble, Mayfield’s 3^rd, was picked up by TJ Slaton Jr., resulting in another 3 points and what proved to be an unassailable lead.

Mayfield breathed some life into the game and finally contributed positively on the ground, running in a touchdown from 8 yards, but it proved too little, too late, as Burrow and the Bengals remained composed to keep hold of the ball and run out the clock.

What will surely excite Bengals fans the most from today is the new look defense producing 4 takeaways and completely alleviating the pressure from Joe Burrow and his offense to need to win the game every week on their own backs. We said it in preseason, but this team will go along way this year if they get that level of defensive production regularly for their star quarterback.
There’s no immediate panic for the Buccaneers, but this appears to be a pretty accurate reflection of where they’re at. Close, but not close enough at the moment. There’s every change that if they truly believe they can contend, they’ll seek reinforcements before the trade deadline.
