Steve Belichick Resigns From North Carolina

North Carolina defensive coordinator Steve Belichick has resigned following the conclusion of an investigation into allegations surrounding the football program.

UNC announced that Belichick’s resignation will officially take effect on October 27, 2026, following the end of his current medical leave.

Belichick had been away from the program since August 6, when North Carolina announced he was taking an indefinite medical leave. No timetable was provided for his return, and he remained away from the team throughout training camp and the beginning of the season.

UNC announced that its investigation was finished, releasing a statement:

“The investigation determined that certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina’s values and standards of conduct. The investigation also found that these actions were isolated in scope and not a systemic failure,” the university said in a statement.

UNC did not specify which actions led to Belichick’s resignation or provide individual findings against him.

Belichick’s departure is the latest major change inside the program. General manager Michael Lombardi resigned effective September 3 after previously being placed on paid administrative leave while UNC conducted its investigation.

Belichick spent the 2024 season as Washington’s defensive coordinator before joining his father, HC Bill Belichick, at North Carolina. Before entering college, he spent more than a decade working under his father with the New England Patriots.

North Carolina has not immediately announced a replacement at defensive coordinator.
