Old becomes new as Bills Mafia enters fresh start

After 53 unforgettable years at ‘old’ Highmark Stadium, a new era begins for Buffalo tonight as they host Detroit for the first game at the ‘new’ Highmark Stadium.

The Bills’ management made the call in March 2023 to move to a new stadium that is equipped for the modern fan experience, which allowed their former home ground to have somewhat of a retirement tour over the past 3 seasons, hosting a few playoff wins and some unforgettable snow games.

As a parting gesture, the team even allowed fans to purchase seats, bleachers and other various pieces of memorabilia from the stadium, but it’s the memories that’ll endure – from the 35-3 comeback in the 1993 Wildcard against the Houston Oilers en route to an improbable AFC Championship win to the blaring of Mr Brightside over the loud speakers in recent years.

But $2.2 billion later, we’ll get our first look at regular season play on the new grass tonight, after it played host to 2 preseason matches.

From a gameplay standpoint, the notable change for Buffalo is the use of grass as opposed to turf, which made headlines in the preseason due to plenty of divots. Let’s hope that ground staff have adjusted over the past month to produce a surface suitable for Buffalo’s winter climate, as the stadium also doesn’t feature a roof.

The most remarkable and unlikely fact surrounding the Bills’ change of venue is the decrease in seated capacity, which is greater than 10,000 fans. The team has had no trouble selling out over 70,000 seats each week in the past, but management have prioritised the premium fan experience and club seating, rather than maximising total number of seats.

The overall reaction from fans, both from the Bills Mafia and league-wide, has been what you’d expect after reading the above. The infrastructure and design of the stadium has received maximum praise and will look stunning tonight, but eyebrows have certainly been raised about the neglect of faithful Bills fans from the lower-class, who have for so long been the ones willing to sit through 30-degree weather in the snow to watch their team.
