Anthony Richardson Named Colts QB2

The Colts have officially named Anthony Richardson their QB2 behind starter Daniel Jones.

HC Shane Steichen announced Thursday that Richardson won the backup job over Riley Leonard, who will begin the season as QB3.

“I’m thankful they believe in me enough to promote me to QB2,” Richardson said. “I’m ready to work and I’m willing to work with this team and just provide my best self.”

The decision comes after Richardson and Leonard competed throughout training camp and the preseason. Richardson finished the preseason completing 21 of 33 passes for 249 yards.

It also clears up some confusion surrounding the Colts quarterback room after some outlets reported in August that Richardson had been demoted to QB3 behind Leonard. Indianapolis never officially announced that move, and Richardson will instead enter Week 1 as the team’s primary backup.

Richardson’s future with the Colts has been uncertain throughout the offseason. The former No. 4 overall pick and his agent requested a trade in February, but a deal never materialized.

Despite the trade request, Richardson remained with Indianapolis and continued competing throughout the summer.

“I’m looking forward to helping the team,” Richardson said during the preseason. “They truly believe I still have a chance to be on this squad and I love that. I just want to be able to contribute, put my best foot forward and help the team win.”

Richardson was originally selected No. 4 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. Injuries and inconsistent play have disrupted his career early on. On top of that, Richardson suffered an eye injury during pregame warmups in October 2025 that sidelined him for two months.

Through his NFL career, Richardson has completed 177 of 350 passes for 2,400 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. He has added 10 rushing touchdowns and holds an 8-7 record as a starter.

Richardson is entering the final year of his rookie contract, leaving his future beyond this season uncertain.
