Bears outlast Panthers in monstrous shootout

After hosting playoff action for the first time in a decade last season, football returned to Carolina this afternoon, with a rare level of expectation lingering above the Panthers’ season potential. A battle of the back-to-back 1^st overall picks of 2023 and 2024, Bryce Young and Caleb Williams met for this first time in the league, with both trying to take the leap into superstardom this year.

Accordingly with the team’s lofted expectations, as well as a reasonable contingent of travelling Bears fans, Bank of America Stadium had much fewer empty seats as has been customary to see over the last few regular seasons.

It was Carolina who struck first, as Bryce Young wasted no time capitalising on a fumble by Bears wide receiver Luther Burden III, with Chuba Hubbard finding the end zone to give the home team an early lead and igniting the crowd.

In the wake of his recent contract, running back D’Andre Swift was the most promising offensive weapon for Chicago, as his first 7 carries went for 60 yards, leading the Bears down the field as Williams capped off the drive by running in a touchdown in reply.

Rome Odunze accentuated Chicago’s red hot offensive start with a 47-yard deep ball catch, showing shades of Randy Moss, as Swift deservedly got on the board with a score of his own.

The Panthers’ dominant first offensive drive did not initially translate to their next couple, as another punt, followed by a couple of undisciplined penalties set Williams up to deliver an inch perfect pass to Cole Kmet for a 3^rd touchdown in the first 16 minutes of play.

But the contest reached genuine shootout status shortly after, as Bryce Young delivered a dime from midfield to hit Jalen Coker in stride for a walk-in 51-yard touchdown to shift the momentum, trimming Chicago’s lead to 7.

Sticking to his daredevil-like approach to offense, Ben Johnson raised eyebrows immediately with a decision to go for it on 4^th and short on his own 20-yard line and was left with egg on his face as Caleb Williams came up short on a sneak.

The offensive trend continued. Bryce Young found some space to walk in and tie the scores at 21 apiece with 8 to play in the first half.

After the teams traded field goals on the back of more elite quarterback play from the 2 former number one picks, Williams got the last laugh of the first half, weaving through the pass rush and picking up his 2^nd score for the game on a 29-yard house call, with the exhilarating half ending with Chicago in command 31-24.

To add to the intrigue of this offensive masterpiece of a game, Hubbard joined Williams as a multiple touchdown scorer on the day, levelling the scores at 31 with still 9 minutes to play in the 3^rd term.

By the game’s standards, an incredibly long drive from the Bears lasted 6 minutes before Swift registered a double from the goal line, before aa failed 4^th down attempt open the door for Kyle Monangai to get an opportunity in the backfield, which he took advantage of, breaking loose for 61 yards to the house, as the Bears got some comfort in the game.

The result was put beyond doubt when Jahdae Walker found space to score and extend the Bears’ lead even further. Jalen Coker’s second touchdown meant the game became the first since 2018 to have 4+ players to score 2+ touchdowns.

D’Andre Swift wasn’t content with just 2, however, as he made it a hattrick to cap off one of the most dominant offensive displays the league will see all year.

Ben Johnson clearly wasn’t playing around when he said he wanted to set offensive records this season. This Bears outfit might be the one to watch across the year if they’re going to approach each game like this one. Carolina’s defense might not be the benchmark, but 59 points is 59 points.

The Panthers certainly don’t lose any admirers with their performance today, but the defense will need to tighten up if they are to go back-to-back in the NFC South. Bryce Young and Jalen Coker have formed an undeniable connection.
