Week 1 wasn’t particularly kind to the New York Giants. It hasn’t been for quite some time, as the team has failed to score a touchdown in each of their last three season openers. On Sunday against the division rival Washington Commanders, the Giants put up a measly six points. Despite 13 plays ran inside the 10-yard line, Big Blue’s offense, which was advertised as improved with the overhauled quarterback room, couldn’t punch it in for six.
Speaking of the quarterback room, Russell Wilson didn’t look great. While the offensive line didn’t do the veteran any favors, Wilson himself is to blame for leaving plays on the field. The deep ball accuracy that was praised and even teased with an 80-yard bomb to undrafted rookie Beaux Collins in the preseason just wasn’t on display in Week 1. Wilson bailed out of pockets early and didn’t see the field well.
Heading into Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys, head coach Brian Daboll reiterated that Wilson will be the starter. The fact that this has to even be said so early into the season shouldn’t be brushed to the side. The Giants have their first round rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart waiting in the wings, who was named the backup following a stellar preseason.
Some fans have campaigned for Dart to start. Others have pushed back, citing that it would be too early and the current state of the Giants’ offensive line wouldn’t do him any favors.
While Wilson will be the starter this week, his leash may be even shorter than most realize. ESPN’s Adam Schefter had an interesting nugget while appearing on the “Pat McAfee Show” on Monday.
The time to go to Jaxson Dart for the New York Giants is coming. We don’t know if it’s gonna to be this week or next week but his time is coming.
If Dart’s time is coming, who knows where this season could go for the Giants.
