Pro Football Hall of Fame Makes Major Changes to Selection Process
The PFHOF is overhauling its selection process for the Class of 2027.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame is making major changes to its selection process, including reducing the number of selectors and changing evaluations for players, coaches, and contributors.
The new rules will take effect starting with the Class of 2027, as the Selection Committee will shrink from 50 members to 28, with 25 voting members and 3 alternates.
One of the biggest changes is eliminating the seniors category altogether.
In the past, players transitioned from the modern-era to the seniors category after 25 years following retirement. Under the new format, all players will remain in the same pool after becoming eligible 5 years following retirement.
Another major change involves the selectors themselves, as Selection Committee members will no longer be tied to individual teams/markets. Pro Football Hall of Fame president and CEO Jim Porter said this previous format left open the possibility of “unintended biases.”
“The Hall continually reviews its bylaws to ensure the selection process reflects the highest standards of integrity and the magnitude of election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame,” Porter said. “There is no more important task at the Hall of Fame than the election of each new class.”
Candidates will still need at least 80% approval to earn enshrinement, so nothing in that department has changed.
The Hall will also return to an in-person meeting for the final round of voting for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.
The overhaul follows negative attention received on the selection process after what became a massive, personal snub, with Bill Belichick not being selected in his first year of eligibility.
