Seahawks Rule Sam Darnold Out for Week 2

The Seahawks will turn to Drew Lock at quarterback in Week 2 with Sam Darnold officially ruled out against the Cardinals.

Head coach Mike Macdonald announced Wednesday that Darnold will not play as he continues recovering from a soft-tissue glute injury suffered during Seattle’s season opener against the Patriots.

Darnold initially left the game with what was described as a hip injury, but further testing revealed the issue was his glute tendon. The good news for Seattle is that Darnold’s hip joint was unaffected.

Despite Darnold being unavailable this week, the Seahawks do not currently plan to place him on IR, which would require Darnold to miss at least 4 games.

Lock will now make his first start of the season Sunday afternoon in Arizona.

Macdonald also said Seattle does not expect to add another quarterback while Darnold is sidelined. Lock and second-year QB Jalen Milroe will remain the Seahawks quarterbacks until Darnold is able to return.

There is still no exact timeline for Darnold’s return, but avoiding IR leaves the door open for him to return before the 4-game mark.
