SEC Files Lawsuit Against LSU, Lane Kiffin

The SEC has filed a federal lawsuit against LSU and HC Lane Kiffin amid the school’s push to allow former NFL players to return to college football, according to Pete Nakos of On3.

The SEC is suing under the First Amendment, alleging that “Defendants waged a deliberate and coordinated campaign to recruit professional athletes to play football for LSU during the 2026-27 season.”

According to the conference, that effort included players who had signed NFL contracts with the Browns, Saints and Buccaneers.

The SEC also argues LSU’s conduct “has already harmed the conference and threatens to cause further substantial harm if not curbed,” according to Dellenger.

The dispute centers around LSU’s attempt to gain eligibility for former Ole Miss players Zxavian Harris and Dae’Quan Wright, who both spent time in the NFL before attempting to return to college football.

The SEC is asking the court to “enter a preliminary and permanent injunction prohibiting Defendants from violating the Conference’s First Amendment rights by compelling the Conference to associate with conduct that is contrary to the Conference’s purpose and mission.”

According to Dellenger, SEC administrators had discussed taking legal action against LSU for several days. The lawsuit is similar to legal action the Big 12 previously took against Texas Tech in the Brendan Sorsby eligibility case.

According to On3, a judge is expected to determine whether a temporary restraining order will remain in place until a trial date is set.

If LSU receives the injunction it is seeking, the school would have legal standing to play Harris and Wright.

LSU is scheduled to open its 2026 season Saturday night against No. 11 Clemson.
