The Pressure Meter: New Acquisitions

As we’re now within a week of regular season NFL action, the third and final edition of this season’s pressure meter has arrived. Preme Football have already ranked the top 5 coaches and top 10 quarterbacks, and it’s time to put those who have changed franchises this offseason under the microscope.

A few huge names, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, found new homes over the summer, with many teams seeing them as the key to unlock Super Bowl success. Please note, this list only includes players who have joined their new team via trade or free agency over the offseason, not draftees. Let’s get into it.

10. Riq Woolen

Despite being part of one of the league’s best defenses in Seattle last year, which helped the team to a title, Woolen himself had another up and down season. He signed with Philadelphia on a one-year, $15 million deal, joining an equally strong defense and particularly cornerback room, headlined by young superstars Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. As a result, Woolen will likely not be tasked with having to guard the opposition’s biggest threat each week, allowing him to play to his full potential as a disruptive ballhawk, on an airtight Eagles defense, albeit one that ranked middle of the league for interceptions in the 2025 season. A great new situation for Woolen to consistently play to his potential and show why he was named All-Pro as a rookie in 2022.

9. Jared Verse

Verse is blessed with talent and has put that on full display in his 2 years with the Los Angeles Rams, but whenever you’re traded for the league’s best player, Myles Garrett, pressure is naturally going to come your way. The Cleveland Browns’ front office, having committed to a youthful revamp of the team, have entrusted Verse to be the headline act of the defense, alongside Mason Graham and Carson Schwesinger. Although a strong season from Verse would hardly guarantee team success, with it being hard to see the Browns winning more than a handful of games, he’s under pressure to justify that the team did the right thing trading Garrett for him, as the team hopes to stay on the right path in their rebuild.

8. Kenneth Walker III

Walker put up one of the great playoff runs by a running back the last time we saw him on the NFL field. But as far as his new fanbase, the Chiefs’ kingdom, are concerned, that is well and truly in the past, and he’s in Kansas City now to refresh the dynasty. Signed on a 3-year, $43 million deal, the 25-year-old might be the most talented running back that Patrick Mahomes has been equipped with. With Kansas City coming off a rare disappointing season and missing the playoffs, Walker is expected to make an immediate impact and help return the franchise to championship contention. As a result of their sustained success, Kansas City fans are certainly harsh judges of their players, and anything less than Pro Bowl-level production from Walker could be viewed as a disappointment from the faithful.

7. DJ Moore

In somewhat similar circumstances to Walker, Moore joins the Buffalo Bills as the clear number 1 option in the team’s wide receiver room, giving Josh Allen the primary target he has cried out for in the past 2 years, following Stefon Diggs’ departure. Moore was somewhat superseded by Chicago’s youthful recievers, Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III, and after recording just 682 receiving yards for the season, sought a move to refresh his career. Acquired for a second-round pick, the pressure is right on Moore to return to the form from his career-best 2023 season, as the Bills remain in contention and seek to finally break their Super Bowl drought, having failed to clear the final hurdle for a number of years under Allen now.

6. Trey Hendrickson

Hendrickson enters the 2026 season under massive pressure following his move across the AFC North from Cincinnati to Baltimore. Having spent many of the past few seasons as one of the league’s most productive edge rushers, Hendrickson was handed a massive four-year, $112 million contract by the Ravens, making him the biggest outside free-agent signing in franchise history. Baltimore have made it clear that they see him as the player capable of fixing a pass rush that became a major weakness last season. Adding to this pressure, though outside of Hendrickson’s personal control, is the failed trade for Maxx Crosby that the Ravens originally attempted to pull off, which ended up falling through due to a failed medical assessment. Hendrickson was consistently let down by his defensive teammates in Cincinnati and once again it’s clear that Hendrickson will need to be at his brilliant best to keep Baltimore in the Super Bowl picture.

5. Myles Garrett

After breaking the NFL single-season sack record with 23 sacks in 2025 and earning First Team All-Pro honours, Garrett has essentially set an impossible standard for himself heading into his first season in Los Angeles. As mentioned above, the Rams gave up Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick and a 2029 third-round pick to acquire him, making it clear that they view Garrett as the final piece of a defence capable of winning a championship. Garrett’s career has perhaps been underrated by many due to the terrible team around him in Cleveland, but he finally gets a chance to show off on a contender and potentially get the ring he has sought for so long. He joins by far the league’s most talented roster on paper, which also brought 3-time Defensive Player of the Year, Aaron Donald, out of retirement, during the week to add to this stacked roster. Under the pump, but there’s nothing to suggest he won’t live up to the hype.

4. Tua Tagovailoa

After spending six seasons in Miami and establishing himself as a legitimate starting quarterback, Tua was benched midway through last season and ultimately fell out of favour with the Dolphins’ new regime, making this move feel like a much-needed reset for his career. Though many suggest Michael Penix Jr., when healthy, will be named the team’s starter, his status for Week 1 remains up in the air, which might just give Tagovailoa the lifeline and opportunity he seeks to prove he still has what it takes to be a starting-quality quarterback in the league. His time in Miami showed flashes of exactly what he can be, but injuries, inconsistency and his pathetic finish to the 2025 season have left plenty of questions surrounding his future. Time to stay healthy and resurrect his career.

3. AJ Brown

After four seasons in Philadelphia, including two Pro Bowl campaigns and a Super Bowl victory, Brown now assumes the responsibility of becoming the premier receiving option for Drake Maye and helping take New England to the next level, after their fairytale 2025 campaign fell at the final hurdle. Brown’s move out of Philadelphia had felt like a long time coming and was one of the most notable trades of the offseason, as he appeared to become increasingly frustrated with his role in the Eagles’ offense, despite the recent Super Bowl victory and still posting another 1000-yard receiving season in 2025. As a result of this, there’s pressure on Brown now to prove that he wasn’t the problem in Philadelphia towards the end and that he still has what it takes to be a number 1 option on a contender. With the draft capital involved and the expectations surrounding Maye all adding to the spotlight, there’s plenty riding on Brown’s first season in New England.

2. Dexter Lawrence II

With the Cincinnati Bengals giving up the 10^th overall pick to acquire Lawrence, having so far spent his entire seven-year career in New York and establishing himself as one of the league’s best interior defensive linemen, he must justify the significant price Cincinnati paid for him as the answer to their well-documented defensive struggles. After 3 consecutive years as a Pro Bowler, the 2025 season was Lawrence’s worst of his career, recording just 0.5 sacks for the entire year, adding to the pressure given what the Bengals require from him to compliment their star-studded offense and propel the team into Super Bowl contention. Bengals fans are fed up with 3 successive years without playoff football, and there is pressure on this team from all angles. Week 1 in Houston will tell us a lot.

1. Kyler Murray

We’ve already mentioned Murray in our Quarterback Pressure Meter, so this will be brief. A former number 1 pick, entering what should be the prime of his career, yet playing for his career now. He’s equipped with plenty of talent, especially Justin Jefferson, but Minnesota invested a lot of draft capital in his backup, JJ McCarthy, who is waiting in the wings for an opportunity should Murray get off to a slow start.
