Bears stave off Falcons late in Williams’ return
Caleb Williams helped Chicago to a win in Atlanta on return from a hamstring injury.
The Chicago Bears went into to Atlanta looking to build on a promising start to the season, while the Falcons hoped to make the most of home advantage and strengthen their position in a competitive NFC. Both teams entered the Week 6 contest with plenty to prove, but the biggest talking point was Chicago quarterback Caleb Williams’ return after missing 3 games with a hamstring injury. His availability gave the Bears’ offense a major boost as they looked to return to the winners list.
Williams looked comfortable from the opening drive, guiding Chicago downfield before connecting with tight end Colston Loveland for a 14-yard touchdown. The Bears struck again on their next scoring possession, with D’Andre Swift powering into the end zone from 4 yards out to give the visitors a 14-0 advantage. Atlanta struggled to find an answer, with Michael Penix Jr. and the offense unable to sustain drives against a disciplined Chicago defense.
The Falcons finally got on the scoreboard in the second quarter. Following a missed field goal by Cairo Saintos, Penix Jr. found Jahan Dotson for a 13-yard touchdown. Atlanta briefly had a chance to make the contest closer, but Chicago’s defense continued to apply pressure, forcing the Falcons into difficult situations. The Bears responded before halftime after a muffed punt, as Swift scored his second rushing touchdown from 2 yards out to restore a two-score lead. Chicago went into the break ahead 21-7, firmly in control of the contest.
The third quarter proved decisive. Atlanta’s offense remained unable to build momentum, and Chicago extended its advantage when Roschon Johnson got in on the act and rushed 4 yards for a touchdown.

The Bears then received another major break when Falcons returner Zachariah Branch fumbled a kick return for a second time, allowing Chicago to recover deep in Atlanta territory. Although the turnover did not immediately produce another touchdown, it summed up a frustrating afternoon for the home side and left the Bears firmly in command.
Chicago added a 50-yard field goal from Santos to move ahead 31-7, leaving Atlanta facing a daunting deficit heading into the final quarter. Williams had delivered an assured performance in his return, spreading the ball around the field and keeping the Bears’ offense moving.
The Falcons, however, refused to go quietly. Penix Jr. sparked a late rally by finding Kyle Pitts Sr. for a touchdown, and Atlanta converted the 2-point attempt to begin chipping away at the lead. Another touchdown pass to Pitts Sr. helped the Falcons close the gap further, with additional 2-point conversions bringing the score to 31-23. Suddenly, a comfortable Bears victory had become a tense finish.

Chicago’s defense ultimately prevented the comeback from being completed. Kyler Gordon made a crucial impact, forcing a fumble during Atlanta’s late push, while the Bears managed to protect their lead through the closing stages. The final whistle confirmed a 31-23 victory for Chicago, despite Atlanta’s strong finish.
The win lifts the Bears to 4-2 and provides an encouraging boost with Williams back under centre. He completed 30 of 36 passes for 305 yards and a touchdown, while Swift contributed two rushing scores. Atlanta falls to 2-4 after another difficult home performance, with its late rally unable to make up for a slow start. Chicago will look to carry its momentum into its next matchup against the New England Patriots, while the Falcons must regroup quickly ahead of a challenging meeting with the undefeated San Francisco 49ers.
