No touchdowns needed for Cardinals to down Rams
6 field goals from Chad Ryland were enough to inspire Arizona to an upset win in Los Angeles.
On a weekend filled with divisional matchups, the Arizona Cardinals travelled to SoFi Stadium looking to turn a difficult start to the season around, while the Los Angeles Rams hoped to cruise to a much-needed victory at home and strengthen their position in a competitive NFC West. They entered Week 6 with a 2-3 record, making the divisional matchup an important opportunity to gain ground.
Arizona needed a more consistent offensive performance and some form of defensive resistance, while Los Angeles was looking to build on its attacking talent, which got the best out of itself in the second half against the Buffalo Bills last week, and avoid another frustrating result against a divisional rival.
The Rams hit the scoreboard first after Quentin Lake intercepted Jacoby Brissett’s pass intended for tight end Trey McBride early in the opening quarter. Although Los Angeles failed to turn the takeaway into a touchdown, new kicker Blake Grupe converted a 44-yard field goal to give the hosts the lead. However, Grupe injured his knee while tackling Cardinals returner Devin Duvernay on the ensuing kickoff, forcing punter Ethan Evans to take over kicking duties for the remainder of the afternoon.
Arizona responded with a promising drive featuring a 26-yard completion from Brissett to McBride, but the Rams’ defense tightened near the red zone. Chad Ryland converted a 34-yard field goal to level the score at 3-3, before adding a 30-yarder early in the second quarter to put the Cardinals ahead.

Los Angeles finally found the end zone midway through the second quarter when Stafford connected with running back Blake Corum for a 15-yard touchdown. The Rams had no choice but to attempt a 2-point conversion without a kicker, but Stafford was sacked and fumbled during the play, leaving the score at 9-6.
Arizona controlled the closing stages of the half, producing a lengthy drive that consumed almost five minutes before Ryland converted a 22-yard field goal with 46 seconds remaining. The teams entered halftime all square after a tightly contested opening two quarters.
The Cardinals took control of possession after the break, putting together an impressive 15-play drive that lasted 8 and a half minutes. They weren’t able to fully capitalise, however, as Ryland knocked through a 38-yard field goal to restore Arizona’s advantage. The extended possession also limited the Rams’ opportunities, with Los Angeles managing just one offensive possession during the third quarter. Stafford missed a chance to find a wide-open Puka Nacua downfield, and the Rams later failed to convert 4th and 1 inside Cardinals territory.
Arizona continued to apply pressure in the fourth quarter, with Ryland converting another field goal, this time from 27 yards, to extend the margin to 6 points. The Rams had opportunities to respond, but a costly fumble by tight end Tyler Higbee after a reception gave possession back to Arizona. Los Angeles’ next drive also ended without points after penalties and an incomplete pass forced a turnover on downs, as time really became a factor.
Stafford finally produced a late response, connecting with Nacua for a 42-yard gain before moving the Rams into scoring range. After another completion to Nacua and a 7-yard pass to Kyren Williams, Stafford found tight end Colby Parkinson for a 6-yard touchdown, as the home side appeared to have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. They brought out Evans to attempt the extra point, and he made no mistake, giving Los Angeles a 16-15 lead with just 47 seconds remaining.

Brissett, however, had one final answer. On the first play of Arizona’s ensuing possession, he completed a 21-yard pass to Jalen Brooks, and an unnecessary roughness penalty against the Rams added another 15 yards. A 5-yard run from Tyler Allgeier moved the Cardinals into field-goal range, allowing Ryland to step up and convert a 43-yard kick as time expired – his 6th field goal on the afternoon.
The 18-16 win lifts Arizona to 2-4 and delivers a valuable divisional victory, renewing their confidence in an unlikely playoff push. Brissett finished with 218 passing yards, while the Cardinals’ defense repeatedly disrupted Stafford’s rhythm.
For Los Angeles, the defeat drops the Rams to 2-4, despite Stafford throwing for 222 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Rams must address their offensive inconsistency and costly mistakes as the season progresses, otherwise preseason’s Super Bowl favourites will have their season slip away before it even gets rolling.
