Primetime Packers’ defense stifles Cowboys in win

Sunday Night Football saw 2 of the league’s long-tenured heavyweights face off as the Green Bay Packers hosted the Dallas Cowboys at Lambeau Field. The Cowboys were certainly looking to rebound from a disappointing loss to Tampa Bay, while the Packers hoped to extend their winning streak and close in on the NFC North.

With Dak Prescott and Jordan Love leading two talented offenses, the Sunday night matchup promised plenty of attacking firepower, with the previous 2 matchups between the teams both yielding 80 total points between them.

After forcing Dallas quickly off the field in the early going, Green Bay opened the scoring with a lengthy drive that consumed much of the first quarter. Love steadily moved the Packers downfield, somehow passing for over 100 yards in the one drive, converting crucial 3rd downs before finding breakout receiver Matthew Golden for a 9-yard touchdown.

The Cowboys’ special teams also suffered an early setback when star returner KaVontae Turpin sustained a rib injury and was ruled out. Green Bay subsequently gained momentum, although Love threw an interception that gave Dallas an opportunity to respond. Prescott, however, returned the favour with an interception of his own, allowing the Packers to regain control.

Green Bay extended its lead with a 25-yard field goal from Smack before putting together another productive possession. Love finished the drive himself, sneaking into the end zone from a yard out to cap the sequence and push the Packers ahead 17-0. Dallas struggled to generate consistent offensive rhythm, while Prescott’s second interception of the game left the visitors unable to build any meaningful momentum, needing a major second half turnaround if they were to come back.

Dallas finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter. Running back Javonte Williams powered into the end zone on short yardage, finishing a drive that offered the Cowboys a much-needed foothold in the contest. Brandon Aubrey’s extra point reduced the deficit to 10 points, giving Dallas a potential platform for a comeback.

Continuing to have all the answers, Green Bay responded with another scoring drive, as Smack converted a 44-yard field goal. The kick maintained the home side’s control as the third quarter progressed, leaving Dallas needing all its offensive weaponry to fire in the final quarter just to make a game of it.

Seemingly beginning to pick up some momentum in reaching midfield, the Cowboys were stifled once again by the Packers’ disreuptive defense. A short pass from Prescott to CeeDee Lamb was broken up on 4th and 2, giving Love and the Green Bay offense a golden opportunity to drain some clock and potentially score the dagger.

Continuing to work primarily through Golden, who surpassed 100 receiving yards, the Packers got themselves into the red zone but did have to settle for another 3 points off the boot of Smack, leaving the door ever-so-slighly ajar for Dallas with 10 minutes left to play.

The Cowboys’ best offense of the night seemed to come through penalties, which were enough to move them into the red zone with a genuine opportunity to cut the deficit to one score. But they came away from the drive in the manner they had for most of the night – empty-handed.

With 5 minutes remaining, Green Bay sought nothing more than to drain the clock via the ground game, and despite giving the Cowboys another possession, it was too little, too late as Ryan Flournoy’s junk time touchdown only meant the home side exited primetime with a 23-13 win.

The struggles for Dallas have been well-documented and don’t seem to have a solution at the ready right now. It’s gone from the defense costing them games, to suddenly the offense looking lifeless, having combined for merely 29 points over the past couple of weeks. Sitting now at 2-4, they get their final opportunity to kickstart their campaign on primetime against the depleted Philadelphia Eagles at home next Monday night.
