Packers leap to victory at Lambeau over Panthers
Green Bay overcame Carolina at home, improving to 5-3 on the season.
Thursday Night Football made its way to Green Bay in Week 8, with the Packers playing host to the Carolina Panthers in a pivotal NFC matchup. The Panthers entered atop the NFC South, despite a hefty Week 7 defeat, while Green Bay sat on the verge of the playoff picture in a stacked NFC North division.
The game came to life on the very first play, when Coleman Owen fumbled the opening kickoff for his first touch as a Packer. Bryce Young and Carolina’s offense couldn’t capitalise on advantageous field position, however, settling for a short field goal to open their account on the night.
The teams traded quick 3-and-out possessions before Jordan Love settled in, though Green Bay’s run game continued its season-long trend of being largely ineffective. A 3rd down connection to Christian Watson got the Packers into the red zone, and Tucker Kraft got the call to find the end zone from 12 yards out on a bullet from Love. Trey Smack did miss the extra point, continuing his woes in the kicking game.
Young remained composed in the hostile environment, leading his team’s best drive of the first half in response. Chuba Hubbard eventually reaped the rewards, punching in a touchdown from the goal line to see the Panthers take back the lead.

Green Bay’s second turnover of the night came when Watson had the ball punched out after a short catch, with Bobby Okereke diving on the fumble. The Panthers again failed to make the most of it, punting the ball away quickly once more.
Love and the Packers offense really clicked into gear when he found Watson for a monstrous 53-yard completion down the field, although it was immediately soured when the star receiver stayed down with a chest injury and was subsequently taken to hospital, only to make an improbable return to the game in the 3rd quarter. On his fourth attempt from inside the 10-yard line, Josh Jacobs scored the go-ahead touchdown for Green Bay.
Ty’Ron Hopper made a savvy play to intercept Young around midfield. The Packers’ breakout linebacker batted a pass into the air and then claimed it himself, solidifying the momentum well and truly in the home side’s favour.
With Watson out temporarily, the burden fell on Matthew Golden to step up in the passing game. After dropping a pass in the end zone, he responded on the very next play by catching a wide-open ball to punctuate Green Bay’s second consecutive touchdown drive, which contributed to their 20-10 halftime lead.
The trend of proceedings stayed the same out of the break. The Panthers had no choice but to go for it on 4th and short around midfield, but Hubbard was stuffed short of the line to gain as things went from bad to worse for the visitors. Yet again, Love carved up the Carolina defense to make them full price for the turnover, and Jacobs scored his second touchdown of the night on short yardage.

The Panthers offense worked down the field for the first time in a while, but only put 3 points on the board through Ryan Fitzgerald’s second field goal of the night, trailing by 14 as they entered the final period.
With Love and the Packers on the verge of scoring a dagger touchdown, Zakee Wheatley stepped in to intercept a throw towards the end zone, sparking some sort of life into his team to attempt an unlikely comeback.
Needing to be aggressive and find 2 touchdowns in the remaining 10 minutes, Young started to get some production out of Jalen Coker, while Hubbard remained the focal point of the offense both on the ground and through the air. A 4th down completion to Coker went for 26 yards and a touchdown, bringing the margin back to 8 points with 5 and a half minutes remaining, striking genuine fear into the home fans for the first time all night.
While the Carolina did not come to play defensively until the end of the third quarter, they made the most of their resurgence, stifling Green Bay once again and earning the ball back close to midfield with ample time to potentially tie the game against all odds.
But a strange decision to run the ball on 3rd and long set up another 4th down with the game effectively on the line, and this one fell incomplete to Tetairoa McMillan.
With nothing but draining the clock on their mind, the Packers wound it down to 22 seconds and did enough to close out a 27-19 victory. Despite Jacobs’ return to the lineup, their run game was almost a non-factor once again, averaging just 2.5 yards per carry collectively, but Love and the receiver room have stepped up tremendously in the first half of the season to compensate.
The Panthers’ hot start to 2026 has slowed down over the past fortnight, and a crucial few weeks await them if they are to defend their divisional title from last season.
