Chiefs remain unbeaten while Chargers fall again
It was more of the same for Los Angeles in Kansas City, falling to a 6-22 defeat.
The Kansas City Chiefs returned from their bye week looking to preserve their unbeaten start and strengthen their grip on the AFC West, with the Los Angeles Chargers arriving at Arrowhead Stadium desperate to finally inject some kind of life into their season. The divisional rivalry offered the Chargers an unlikely opportunity to turn their fortunes around, but a 0-5 start had left little room for further mistakes if they were to complete the most improbable of turnarounds.
Kansas City had looked increasingly dangerous through the opening weeks, returning to some of their best form under Andy Reid after a down 2025. For Los Angeles, Justin Herbert needed support from an offense struggling to convert promising possessions into points, which has been the story of his career to-date.
Kansas City wasted little time stamping their authority. They opened the scoring with Harrison Butker’s 44-yard field goal before their defense forced a quick Chargers punt. Mahomes then guided the hosts downfield, setting up Kenneth Walker III for a 33-yard touchdown run through the middle of the defense. A missed extra point left Kansas City ahead midway through the first quarter.
Los Angeles responded with a lengthy drive, helped by a 17-yard connection between Herbert and Ladd McConkey. However, McConkey was evaluated for a concussion after taking a hit and would eventually be ruled out. The drive ended with Cameron Dicker converting a 23-yard field goal, giving the Chargers their first points and cutting the deficit to 9-3.

The second quarter offered Los Angeles a chance to make the contest more competitive, but turnovers and missed opportunities continued to undermine their progress. Herbert threw an interception to Chiefs linebacker Jack Cochrane, giving Kansas City possession deep in Chargers territory. Yet the visitors’ defense responded when cornerback Cam Hart intercepted Mahomes in the end zone, preventing the Chiefs from extending their lead on that possession.
The reprieve did not last. Kansas City’s defense forced another punt, and Mahomes responded with an efficient drive, completing all 5 of his passes for 65 yards while adding a 10-yard run. Walker III finished the possession with a 2-yard touchdown run, his second score of the afternoon. Butker then added a 50-yard field goal as the first half expired, sending the Chiefs into the break with a commanding 19-3 advantage.
Los Angeles needed an immediate response after halftime and briefly appeared capable of producing one. Herbert connected with Quentin Johnston for a 57-yard gain, the Chargers’ longest play of the season, taking them all the way to the Kansas City 1-yard line. But a holding penalty pushed the offense backwards, and a series of unsuccessful plays forced Los Angeles to settle for Dicker’s 30-yard field goal. Yet again, a promising drive yielded only 3 points, leaving the Chargers trailing 19-6.
The Chiefs were unable to build on their first-half momentum immediately, and Los Angeles continued to find occasional opportunities through its defense. Kansas City failed to convert on 4th down during one possession, while a fumble on a punt return later gave the Chargers another chance with favourable field position. However, Herbert’s offense simply could not capitalise, losing ground before punting the ball away.
Kansas City’s defense continued to frustrate the visitors, recording four sacks on Herbert and forcing three turnovers on downs. The Chargers reached the red zone again late in the game but were unable to convert their final 4th down attempt, ending any hopes of a comeback. Butker’s 30-yard field goal with 4 minutes remaining provided the only points of the fourth quarter and sealed the 22-6 result.

Walker III finished with 128 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns, while Mahomes completed 23 of 30 passes for 272 yards. Herbert threw for 204 yards and an interception as the Chargers repeatedly failed to turn field position into scoring opportunities.
The victory lifted Kansas City to 5–0, keeping the Chiefs as the AFC’s only unbeaten team and giving Mahomes his 100th win as a starting quarterback. Los Angeles fell to 0–6, its worst start since 2000, and now heads into its bye week out of answers as the league’s biggest disappointment of the season thus far. The Chiefs will look to carry their momentum into a difficult matchup against Seattle, while the Chargers have no choice but to use their week off to regroup before facing the Rams.
