Maye inspires Patriots comeback against Dolphins
Despite a slow start to the game, Drake Maye and New England came back to beat Miami.
The New England Patriots headed south on Sunday afternoon to Hard Rock Stadium looking to keep their season moving in the right direction, while the Miami Dolphins were in need of a much-needed response in front of their home supporters. At 4-3, New England had an opportunity to strengthen its position in the AFC East and move closer to the division’s leading contenders.
Miami, in contrast, entered the contest with just a single win from its opening 6 games, leaving little room for further setbacks. With contrasting ambitions but plenty at stake for both sides, Week 8’s divisional meeting presented an important opportunity for each team to make a statement.
The Patriots opened the scoring with an impressive drive, moving 35 yards downfield before Andy Borregales converted a 34-yard field goal to make it 3-0. Miami responded almost immediately, as quarterback Malik Willis and the offense took advantage of a New England turnover.
Wide receiver Efton Chism III was stripped of the football, with cornerback JuJu Brents recovering for the Dolphins at the Patriots’ 19-yard line. Zane Gonzalez converted a 31-yard field goal to level the scores.
Miami’s defense continued to make life difficult for Drake Maye, with Josh Uche recording a sack to end another Patriots possession. The Dolphins then began to find some rhythm offensively, leaning on their rushing attack before Willis connected with Malik Washington for a 23-yard reception. Gonzalez converted another field goal to put the home side ahead.

New England had an opportunity to respond before halftime, putting together a lengthy 12-play drive. However, Miami’s defense held firm, and Borregales missed a 40-yard field goal attempt wide right. The Dolphins made the Patriots pay for the missed opportunity, producing an excellent late first-half possession.
Willis connected with Greg Dulcich for 19 yards before finding Jalen Tolbert for a 23-yard gain. Caleb Douglas then moved the chains with an 18-yard reception, bringing Miami into scoring range. Willis eventually found Washington for a 1-yard touchdown on the cusp of halftime, extending the Dolphins’ advantage to 13-3 at the main break.
New England desperately needed a response after the interval, and Maye delivered one almost immediately. The Patriots quarterback connected with Kyle Williams on a deep 43-yard pass into the end zone. Replay footage showed Williams had crossed the goal line before losing possession, and the original call was overturned for a touchdown. Borregales added the extra point to bring New England back within 3 points.
The momentum had shifted, and Miami’s offense began to struggle against an aggressive Patriots defense. New England put together its most impressive possession of the afternoon, marching 73 yards downfield across 13 plays. Maye finished the drive himself, faking a pitch to Rhamondre Stevenson before running 2 yards into the end zone with just 59 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The successful extra point gave the Patriots a 17-13 lead.
Miami’s next possession proved costly. Willis attempted to find Caleb Douglas, but the pass was intercepted by New England, handing the visitors another opportunity to extend their advantage.
Maye needed little time to capitalise, finding DeMario Douglas on a short pass before the receiver broke through the Dolphins’ secondary and raced 48 yards into the end zone. Borregales converted the extra point, putting New England 24-13 ahead, having come to life and broken the game right open.

With the Dolphins suddenly facing an 11-point deficit, Willis needed to produce something special. Miami initially struggled to move the chains, with a penalty against Ollie Gordon II disrupting the offense and forcing the running back to spend a play on the sideline. However, the Dolphins did give themselves a gimmer of hope with just over 2 minutes remaining.
Willis connected with rookie wide receiver Kevin Coleman Jr. for a 35-yard touchdown, bringing Miami within a single score. The Dolphins attempted a 2-point conversion to make it a 3-point game, but Willis’ pass was incomplete.
Miami then attempted an onside kick in the hope of reclaiming possession, but Stevenson recovered the ball for New England. The Patriots successfully ran down the remaining clock, denying the Dolphins another opportunity and securing a 24-19 victory.
The result moved New England to 5-3, while Miami fell to 1-6 despite leading by 10 points at halftime. After a difficult opening half, Maye’s 3-touchdown performance proved the difference as the Patriots produced a commanding second-half response.
