Ravens require overtime but overcome Falcons

Without Lamar Jackson, the Baltimore Ravens travelled to Atlanta for a Sunday Night Football clash against the Falcons, with both sides looking to build momentum in their 2026 seasons. Baltimore entered the matchup facing a significant challenge, with the two-time MVP Jackson sidelined through injury and Tyler Huntley stepping in to lead the offense.

The Falcons, meanwhile, were keen to make the most of home-field advantage at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with Michael Penix Jr. looking to guide Atlanta to an important victory against a true contender from the AFC. With Baltimore aiming to maintain its early-season momentum and Atlanta seeking a statement performance in front of its home supporters, the stage was set for a must-see primetime clash under the lights.

Atlanta made an early stand on defense after Baltimore opened the game with a promising drive. The Ravens had moved swiftly into the red zone, but their possession stalled inside the Falcons’ 5-yard line. Tyler Loop did knock through a 21-yard field goal, but the Falcons would have been please with their ability to contain Derrick Henry in the early going.

The Falcons’ defensive prowess remained emphatic throughout the first quarter. On Baltimore’s next possession, Huntley was pressured in the pocket before finding tight end Mark Andrews for a short completion. Andrews was hit by safety Jessie Bates III and lost the ball before being downed, allowing Bates III to recover the fumble and take it back the other way for a touchdown to ignite the home crowd.

Both defenses continued to dictate the tempo as the opening quarter progressed. Baltimore struggled to turn its promising field position into touchdowns, while Atlanta’s offense found it difficult to establish any form of rhythm against the Ravens’ pass rush. The visitors nevertheless added to their tally in the second quarter when Loop converted a 51-yard field goal.

Atlanta responded with its most productive offensive drive of the first half. Penix Jr. found Drake London for a 25-yard gain before connecting with Jahan Dotson for a 36-yard completion to bring them to the doorstep of the end zone. After Bijan Robinson helped advance the ball towards the goal line, Penix Jr. found tight end Kyle Pitts Sr. for a 5-yard touchdown. The Falcons’ ability to fully capitalise on their drives proved the early difference.

Baltimore refused to let the game slip away before half-time. Huntley moved the Ravens downfield with a series of short completions, including a 19-yard connection with Rashod Bateman that helped put Loop within range once again. The kicker converted another 51-yard field goal as the half expired, bringing the Ravens within 5 points, facing a 14-9 halftime deficit.

The Falcons resumed after the interval looking to re-establish their advantage. Robinson helped move the offense into scoring position with a big run, but Baltimore’s defense tightened inside the red zone. Atlanta settled for a field goal of their own, with Nick Folk good from 23 yards to make it 17-9.

With their backs against the wall on the road, the Ravens dug deep to produce their most explosive offensive sequence of the game. Justice Hill broke free for a 47-yard run, immediately putting Baltimore in striking distance. Henry made his mark on the game by finishing the drive with an 18-yard touchdown catch from Huntley. Baltimore attempted a 2-point conversion to tie the game, but Huntley’s pass to Andrews fell incomplete, leaving Atlanta narrowly ahead.

As the teams entered the final term, Atlanta began a potentially decisive drive from its own 10-yard line. Penix Jr. found London for a crucial 19-yard completion on 3rd down before continuing to move the chains with short passes to Pitts Sr. and contributions from Robinson. The Falcons had advanced into Baltimore territory as the clock ticked down, placing pressure on a Ravens defense that needed a stop to give Huntley and the offence another opportunity.

The defense bent but didn’t break, holding Atlanta to another field goal and leaving the door open for Huntley to step up and lead a game-winning drive in Jackson’s absence. He was unable to do so initially, going 3-and-out and leaving the game’s fate in the hands of their defense, as time became a major factor.

With Atlanta on the verge of victory, needing just one more first down to be able to kneel out the clock, the Ravens got the stop they needed. In holding the Falcons to another field goal, the Baltimore offense took over with 2 and a half minutes remaining, trailing by 8 points.

Combining with Flowers and Rashod Bateman, Huntley led the drive inside Atlanta’s 10-yard line, setting up a thrilling set of downs to decide the game. He delivered his best throw of the night when it mattered most, finding Devontez Walker for the touchdown. Baltimore still needed to go for 2 just to tie the scores, and they used the reliable Henry in wildcat formation, from which he walked into the end zone, though 40 seconds still remained.

Chaos ensued throughout Atlanta’s last-gasp bid to win the game in regulation time. Penix Jr. was stripped of the ball, though it was recovered by the Falcons, and hurt his knee on the same play, which meant Tua Tagovailoa had to come in to take his first snap as a member of the team during a critical stage. It all amounted to nothing ultimately, and the game headed into additional time.

Baltimore won the toss and had first use of the ball in overtime. They leant heavily on the run game, executing a perfect 14-play drive that consumed over 7 minutes, before Huntley propelled himself into the end zone for the go-ahead score, leaving just 3 minutes for Atlanta’s offense to produce a response.

Penix Jr. was unable to take his place, leaving Tagovailoa in charge for the biggest drive of his new team’s young season. A potential moment in the sun quickly turned into a moment to forget, as he threw a game-ending interception straight into the hands of Kyle Hamilton, gifting the Ravens a 30-23 victory.

A gritty win for Baltimore, getting the job done on the road without Lamar Jackson against an in-form side. They have now claimed outright leadership of the AFC North with the victory, as their 3 challengers all sit a game below. Atlanta fans will sweat on the status of Penix Jr. more than anything, especially after the disastrous end to the game with Tagovailoa under centre.
