Steelers stay perfect at home, defeat Browns
Pittsburgh evened their season series against Cleveland at Acrisure Stadium.
Acrisure Stadium played host to a pivotal AFC North clash on Sunday, with both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns entering Week 8 with identical 5-2 records. The Browns had enjoyed an impressive start to the campaign, including a narrow 27-24 victory over Pittsburgh in their previous meeting just a few weeks earlier, and were looking to complete a divisional double.
However, the Steelers arrived in strong form following three consecutive victories, including a gritty win over the New Orleans Saints in Paris. With first place in the division up for grabs, there was plenty riding on the latest instalment of this fierce rivalry.
Cleveland received the opening kickoff but immediately found themselves under pressure, as Deshaun Watson was sacked on the second play of the drive. After briefly leaving the field to be assessed for a potential concussion, Watson returned before the Browns’ opening possession ended in disaster.
A fumble by tight end Harold Fannin Jr. was recovered by Pittsburgh, handing the hosts excellent field position. The Steelers wasted little time taking advantage, with Rico Dowdle breaking through for a 9-yard touchdown run to open the scoring.
The Browns’ struggles continued on their next possession, with Pittsburgh’s defense once again forcing a turnover. Patrick Queen made the most of a loose ball, giving Aaron Rodgers and the offense another opportunity to extend the advantage. Although the Steelers initially settled for a Chris Boswell field goal, a 51-yard burst from Jaylen Warren helped establish complete control of the contest. Pittsburgh led 10-0, while Cleveland had managed -1 yards of offense throughout the opening quarter.

The visitors eventually found some points midway through the second period, with Andre Szmyt converting a 32-yard field goal to get Cleveland on the scoreboard. However, Pittsburgh responded through another Boswell kick, this time from 37 yards, restoring the 10-point advantage. Szmyt added a second field goal from 49 yards to bring the Browns within a touchdown, but the Steelers delivered a crucial blow just before halftime.
With seconds remaining, Rodgers connected with Germie Bernard for a 15-yard completion to move Pittsburgh into scoring territory. Rather than settle for another field goal, head coach Mike McCarthy trusted his offense to find the end zone, and Pat Freiermuth delivered with a 1-yard sneak. The touchdown sent the Steelers into the break with a commanding 20-6 advantage.
Pittsburgh wasted little time extending its lead after the restart. Following a defensive stop, Rodgers found Darnell Washington down the left sideline for a spectacular 58-yard catch-and-run, taking the Steelers all the way to the Cleveland 1-yard line.
Warren completed the job on the following play, powering into the end zone to make it 27-6. The running back continued his outstanding afternoon, finishing with 143 yards on 17 carries.
Cleveland struggled to find any response as Pittsburgh’s defense continued to dominate proceedings. The home side’s defensive front was typically influential, with the Steelers consistently disrupting Watson’s rhythm and preventing the Browns from establishing any meaningful rushing attack.

The Browns had a promising opportunity to reduce the deficit early in the fourth quarter, putting together a 12-play drive that brought them within 5 yards of the end zone. However, Denzel Boston was unable to keep his feet in bounds on a 4th down attempt, handing possession back to Pittsburgh without any points. Cleveland failed to score again, while Rodgers was eventually replaced by Mason Rudolph as the hosts comfortably managed the remaining minutes.
Pittsburgh secured an emphatic 27-6 victory, moving to 6-2 and taking sole possession of first place in the AFC North. The Steelers also extended their remarkable home winning streak against Cleveland to 23 consecutive regular-season games.
For the Browns, the defeat brought their 3-game winning streak to an end, dropping them to 5-3 after a frustrating afternoon on both sides of the ball and tempering expectations around their season prospects despite a hot start.
