Jackson injury sours Ravens’ defeat to Bills

The Baltimore Ravens travelled to Highmark Stadium to face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in one of Week 9’s most anticipated AFC matchups. Buffalo entered the contest with an impressive 5-1 record, looking to maintain its position among the conference’s leading contenders after a strong opening to the campaign.

Baltimore arrived at 4-3, hoping to build some consistency after an uneven start to the season. With two of the AFC’s leading quarterbacks, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, going head-to-head, the encounter promised to be an intriguing battle between two genuine postseason contenders.

The Bills made an immediate statement on their opening possession, marching 60 yards downfield before Allen powered his way into the end zone from a yard out. The quarterback needed two attempts to cross the goal line, but his second effort gave Buffalo an early 7-0 advantage. Baltimore’s response was far less encouraging, as Jackson suffered a thumb injury on the opening play of the Ravens’ first possession and was forced to leave the contest. Tyler Huntley entered in relief, but Baltimore’s offense struggled to find any rhythm.

Buffalo continued to apply pressure, with Tyler Bass converting a 56-yard field goal to extend the margin to 10-0. Baltimore finally responded through Derrick Henry, who broke free for a 2-yard touchdown run after the Ravens recovered possession following an interception. The score brought the visitors back within 3 points, although Huntley’s afternoon was also soon to be cut short after he suffered a toe injury in the second quarter.

The Ravens’ offensive difficulties continued as Buffalo’s defense consistently disrupted their replacement quarterback. Cole Bishop delivered a particularly important play, blitzing through the offensive line to force a Huntley fumble, which was recovered by Kaleb Elarms-Orr at the Baltimore 20-yard line. Buffalo capitalised on the field position, although the Ravens’ defense managed to prevent another touchdown, forcing Bass to settle for a 22-yard field goal.

Baltimore’s difficulties showed little sign of improving, with Joe Fagnano struggling to generate any sustained offensive production against an increasingly dominant Buffalo defense. The rookie was intercepted after a pass intended for Zay Flowers was tipped into the air and caught by defensive tackle Davison Igbinosun. Although Buffalo could not immediately capitalise on the turnover, its defense continued to restrict the Ravens to minimal yardage.

Baltimore briefly threatened to reduce the deficit before halftime, but Fagnano was unable to convert a promising red-zone opportunity into points. After a series of incomplete passes and a sack, the Ravens missed a 34-yard field goal attempt, with the ball striking the left upright. Buffalo subsequently added another three points through Bass, who converted from 51 yards with just nine seconds remaining in the half to give the hosts a 16-7 advantage at the break.

The Bills emerged from the interval determined to put the contest beyond reach. Allen immediately connected with DJ Moore for a spectacular 49-yard completion, taking Buffalo deep into Baltimore territory.

Just one play later, James Cook III found space on the right side and accelerated into the end zone for a five-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 23-10. Cook III continued to provide an effective presence in the backfield, finishing with 80 rushing yards from 21 carries.

The fourth quarter belonged entirely to the hosts. Allen found Moore for an 11-yard touchdown, although Buffalo failed to convert the subsequent two-point attempt. The score was particularly specialmfor the quarterback, as it marked his 259th career passing touchdown, moving him beyond Jim Kelly to become the leading passer in Bills franchise history.

Buffalo added further punishment with just under 6 minutes remaining, as Allen delivered a 23-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Kincaid. The tight end made an excellent catch down the left side of the end zone, completing another impressive offensive possession and pushing the final score out to 36-10.

Allen finished with 289 passing yards, two touchdown passes and a further rushing score, while Moore contributed 82 receiving yards and a touchdown. Kincaid led Buffalo’s receiving group with 86 yards and a score. Defensively, the Bills registered 4 sacks, 12 quarterback hits and three turnovers, restricting Baltimore to just 144 total yards.

The 36-10 victory improved Buffalo’s record to 6-1, extending its impressive run of success following a bye week. Baltimore, meanwhile, dropped to 4-4 after a disastrous afternoon that saw both Jackson and Huntley leave with injuries. With Jackson subsequently headed to injured reserve, the Ravens now face significant questions surrounding their quarterback situation as they look to recover from a third consecutive defeat.
