Bengals outscore Titans in overtime thriller

Fresh off their 4th win of the season in Baltimore, the Cincinnati Bengals welcomed the struggling Tennessee Titans to Paycor Stadium on Sunday in an AFC encounter that carried significant importance for two teams heading in very different directions. Cincinnati entered the contest at 4-2, looking to strengthen its position in the playoff picture and build on an impressive start to the campaign.

Tennessee, meanwhile, arrived at 1-6 but had put in a couple of improved performances in recent weeks. The Titans were naturally considerable underdogs, but an explosive opening quarter got them off to a perfect start in their pursuit of an upset win.

They wasted little time making their intentions clear, opening the scoring with a 46-yard field goal from Joey Slye before immediately forcing a Cincinnati 3-and-out. The Titans then produced the first major moment of the afternoon, with Tony Pollard breaking through the Bengals’ defense for a 40-yard rushing touchdown.

Joe Burrow’s afternoon became even more complicated when Titans safety Amani Hooker intercepted the Cincinnati quarterback on the Bengals’ next possession. Tennessee capitalised on the turnover, with Slye converting another field goal from 29 yards to make it 13-0. Cincinnati had been completely outplayed during the opening stages, and the home crowd was beginning to grow restless.

However, the Bengals finally found some rhythm towards the end of the first quarter. Burrow connected with Ja’Marr Chase for a 30-yard touchdown early in the second period, reducing the deficit to 13-7 and providing the home side with a much-needed response.

The home team continued to threaten, but Tennessee’s defense produced an important goal-line stand when Jacob Martin sacked Burrow on 4th down, forcing the Bengals to surrender possession without adding to their score. The Titans were unable to extend their advantage in response, however, and Cincinnati eventually took control of the contest before halftime.

Burrow orchestrated an impressive 67-yard drive, finding Mike Gesicki for a 28-yard completion before connecting with rookie tight end Jack Endries for a 1-yard touchdown. Evan McPherson’s extra point gave Cincinnati a 14-13 lead with just 20 seconds remaining in the first half, completing an extraordinary turnaround after the Bengals had fallen 13 points behind.

The home side carried that momentum into the third quarter. Ward was stripped of the football deep in his own territory, allowing Cincinnati to take advantage of the short field. Burrow needed just one play to punish the mistake, finding Tee Higgins for a 17-yard touchdown to extend the Bengals’ advantage to 21-13.

Yet the Titans refused to disappear. Ward responded with an excellent 80-yard drive, which was capped off by Pollard’s second rushing touchdown of the afternoon from a yard out. Ward then ran in the 2-point conversion himself, tying the contest at 21-21 with plenty of football still to play.

Cincinnati regained the lead through an unusual defensive play late in the third quarter. Following another interception from Hooker, the Titans found themselves backed up close to their own goal line. Pollard was subsequently tackled in the end zone after receiving the handoff, giving the Bengals a safety and a 23-21 advantage heading into the final period.

The fourth quarter was just as chaotic. Tennessee linebacker Kevin Winston Jr. recovered a fumble near midfield, giving Ward and the offense an excellent opportunity to regain the lead. The quarterback made the most of it, connecting with Chimere Dike for an 11-yard touchdown to put the Titans ahead 28-23 with just under 12 minutes remaining.

Cincinnati responded through its increasingly dangerous passing attack. Burrow found Gesicki for a 25-yard touchdown, although the Bengals failed to convert a 2-point attempt of their own, leaving the Bengals narrowly ahead at 29-28.

The lead changed hands once again with under four minutes remaining. Ward connected with Wan’Dale Robinson for a 15-yard touchdown before finding Gunnar Helm for another successful 2-point conversion. Tennessee suddenly held a 36-29 advantage, putting Cincinnati under enormous pressure to produce a response.

Burrow delivered when it mattered most. The quarterback moved the Bengals downfield with a series of perfectly-thrown completions, finding Higgins for an 18-yard touchdown. McPherson converted the extra point to tie the game at 36 apiece, ultimately sending the contest into overtime after an extraordinary final quarter.

Cincinnati won the toss and received the football, with Burrow immediately taking control. The quarterback connected with Chase for 17 yards before finding Samaje Perine and Higgins to move the Bengals deep into Tennessee territory. After another completion to Chase brought Cincinnati inside the 10-yard line, Burrow decided to finish the drive himself, scrambling 9 yards into the end zone for the decisive touchdown.

Tennessee were left with one final opportunity to respond. However, Cincinnati’s defense held firm, forcing Ward into an incomplete pass on 4th and 3 to secure the victory.

The result improved Cincinnati’s record to 5-2, while Tennessee dropped to 1-7 despite producing one of its strongest offensive performances of the season and possibly the best of Cam Ward’s career. For Joe Burrow, it was a remarkable individual display, combining 5 touchdown passes with a game-winning rushing score to go with 3 interceptions and rescue his team from an early deficit.
