Buccaneers stun Cowboys for first win of 2026

The Dallas Cowboys entered a Thursday night contest at home against the struggling Tampa Bay Buccaneers with full intention to build on last week’s dramatic victory over the Houston Texans, while the visitors remained absolutely desperate to end a four-game losing streak. With Baker Mayfield sidelined again with a dislocated thumb, rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels was handed another opportunity to impress in his second career start, in a bid to provide some spark to what had been a lifeless offense early in the season.

Dallas’ offense made a predictably bright start, putting together a swift opening drive that eventuated in Javonte Williams punching the ball into the end zone from a yard out. Tampa Bay took its time to respond, but Daniels settled into the contest to lead a 15-play drive that lasted all of 11 minutes and culminated in a 5-yard touchdown reception for Bucky Irving early on the first play of the second quarter.

After 6 successive punts between the teams, Brandon Aubrey restored the Cowboys’ advantage with a 41-yard field goal just before halftime, giving the home side a narrow 3-point edge at the break. Despite the lead, Dallas had been unable to establish the offensive control that most expected, leaving the door open for Tampa Bay to steal an unlikely win.

The Buccaneers needed little time to turn the game on its head after the restart. Irving showed tremendous patience before bursting through a seam in Cowboys’ defence for a 72-yard marathon run, bringing Tampa Bay into the red zone before Emeka Egbuka finished the drive with a 14-yard rushing touchdown on a well-designed jet sweep.

Dallas’ problems quickly mounted when Dak Prescott handed Yaya Diaby his first career interception on a short throw, allowing Tampa Bay to further extend their advantage. The Buccaneers capitalised on the turnover, with Irving powering across the goal line to bring the the lead to out to 21-10, not before Daniels had found Tez Johnson for a massive gain through the air to set up the score.

The game seemed all but over when KaVontae Turpin fumbled the ensuing kickoff, allowing Tampa Bay’s Kaevon Knowles to recover the ball at the Cowboys’ 37-yard line. They were unable to turn this takeaway into a touchdown, but Chase McLaughlin converted a field goal to stretch the margin to 14, which they took into the final interchange.

Having whittled the clock down to under 9 minutes remaining on the back of a composed performance from Daniels and consistency in the running game, all of the Buccaneers’ hard work was thrown into jeopardy when Todd Bowles made a perplexing decision to go for it on 4th down on Dallas’ 1-yard line. A field goal would have extended the margin to a likely unassailable 3 scores, but Sean Tucker was instead stuffed, keeping the game alive for the home team.

The defensive stand appeared to have the knock-on effect of inspiring the offense. Dak Prescott guided them down the length of the field, eventually connecting with George Pickens for an 18-yard touchdown. A failed 2-point conversion kept the deficit at 8 points, but the game was far from done.

A quick 3-and-out gave Prescott and his talented offense nearly 4 minutes to attempt to tie the scores, though they were without CeeDee Lamb, who was ruled out with a quad injury. With nothing to lose, they breezed into Buccaneers territory. But with just over a minute remaining, a pass from Prescott pierced through the hands of Jake Ferguson to deflect off his facemask and fall into the lap of Alex Anzalone for a game-sealing interception that summed up the Cowboys’ night.

The Buccaneers overcame Bowles’ confusing 4th down decision and held firm in the closing stages to secure the 24-16 victory at AT&T Stadium. They did most of their good work in the third quarter but were able to manage the game well enough to close it out, getting themselves on the board for the season. On the other hand, its more of the same tale for Dallas that has haunted their entire 21st century. One step forward with an inspired win in Houston last week, followed by two steps back with an embarrassing loss at home tonight.
