Cowboys capitulate at hands of Cardinals

Fresh off a primetime victory against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Dallas Cowboys hosted the Arizona Cardinals at AT&T Stadium on Sunday afternoon for an important NFC encounter, with both sides looking to build momentum as the regular season reached its midway point. Dallas arrived in front of its home supporters hoping to make it back-to-back victories after an impressive performance the previous week, while a youthful Arizona outfit travelled to Texas looking to revive their campaign.

Dallas made the stronger start and took the lead in unusual circumstances during the opening quarter. With the Cardinals attempting to defend their own goal line, running back Javonte Williams fumbled just short of the end zone, allowing tight end James Mitchell to recover the loose ball for a touchdown. Brandon Aubrey added the extra point to put the Cowboys ahead.

Arizona struggled to find its rhythm offensively, with Jacoby Brissett unable to establish consistent production through the air. Dallas capitalised on the visitors’ difficulties in the second quarter, putting together an impressive 12-play drive that covered 85 yards. Dak Prescott found Ryan Flournoy for a 9-yard touchdown, extending the advantage to 14-0 and giving the home side complete control of the contest.

The Cardinals eventually got on the scoreboard before the interval, with Chad Ryland converting a 37-yard field goal following a sustained 11-play possession. However, Dallas remained firmly in command at 14-3 heading into halftime.

The Cowboys continued to apply pressure after the break, with Aubrey adding a 31-yard field goal following another lengthy drive to stretch the lead to 17-3. Arizona desperately needed a response, and it arrived through an unlikely source.

With Brissett continuing to struggle, head coach Mike LaFleur turned to backup quarterback Gardner Minshew II in the third quarter. The change provided an immediate spark, but it was running back Tyler Allgeier who delivered the moment that brought the Cardinals back into the contest. Breaking through the middle of the Dallas defense, Allgeier raced 63 yards for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 17-10 and giving the visitors renewed belief.

Dallas restored their two-score advantage early in the fourth quarter when Prescott scrambled 5 yards into the end zone, making it 24-10. Yet Arizona refused to disappear. Minshew II guided another productive possession, finding Allgeier for a five-yard touchdown reception to bring the Cardinals back within 7.

A 35-yard Aubrey field goal with just under four minutes remaining looked to have given Dallas enough breathing room at 27-17. However, the Cowboys’ defense was beginning to unravel in a tale told all too often in recent years, and the offense would soon fail to do its part in closing out the contest.

Minshew II continued to find openings, connecting with Trey McBride for a 14-yard touchdown with just over two minutes remaining. Ryland’s extra point made it 27-24, leaving Dallas with a narrow advantage. After a failed onside kick attempt, the Cowboys managed to respond with a 41-yard Aubrey field goal, extending their lead but leaving the door ajar for a last-gasp touchdown.

With no timeouts and 65 seconds left, Minshew led Arizona on an extraordinary 80-yard drive. Completions to Allgeier and Michael Wilson moved the Cardinals downfield, before Wilson hauled in a 13-yard touchdown with just 6 seconds remaining to tie the game at 30-30.

Unbelievably, Ryland then missed the extra point that would have completed the comeback in regulation, sending the contest into overtime instead, with both teams somehow feeling disbelief as to how they had not already claimed a victory.

Both teams initially struggled to make progress in the extra period, but Dallas’ offense failed to take advantage of its opportunity. Prescott was sacked by Josh Sweat on third down, forcing the Cowboys to punt and handing Arizona another chance to win the game with any score.

Minshew subsequently found Wilson for a crucial 17-yard completion before Allgeier carried the Cardinals into comfortable field-goal range. Ryland made no mistake this time, redeeming himself by converting from 42 yards to seal a stunning 33-30 victory.

The result marked a devastating defeat for Dallas, having led throughout regulation and held a 14-point advantage early in the fourth quarter. Arizona, meanwhile, secured a memorable road victory after refusing to surrender, causing another upset on the road and continuing to show positive signs as to what the future of this franchise has in store.
