Monday Night Football returned to Los Angeles for the second time in the young 2026 season tonight, as the Rams hosted the Buffalo Bills, who entered on the back of a surprise loss to the New England Patriots, after a red-hot first 3 weeks. Josh Allen had led the offense in career-best form, reminiscent of his 2024 MVP-winning season, emerging as the frontrunner for the award through a month.
Inconsistency had underlined Los Angeles’ start to the year. Sitting at 2-2, they came from behind to win in Philadelphia last week, having failed to get going until the last quarter. With the San Francisco 49ers leading the NFC West at an undefeated 5-0, a primetime victory was non-negotiable for the Rams to remain within striking distance and make a statement.
The contest saw an electrifying start when Ray Davis returned the opening kickoff for 70 yards to Los Angeles’ 30-yard line. Stout defense and a sack by Josiah Stewart on 3rd down meant that Allen and the Bills were unable to advance any further, settling for a field goal from Tyler Bass to get on the board.
After Matthew Stafford connected with Puka Nacua 4 times on the Rams’ opening possession, Los Angeles were unable to respond with a 3 points of their own, when Harrison Mevis’ 50-yard attempt sailed wide, handing the ball back to Buffalo close to midfield. They were unable to fully capitalise on the field position, however, bringing Bass out again for a chip shot, which he converted to open up a 6-point lead.

Stafford and the Rams responded with a composed, methodical drive, piecing together plays to eventually get the ball to the league’s biggest red zone threat in Davante Adams, who found the end zone to give the home team the lead. The expected offensive dominance on both sides of the ball really began to shine through when Allen and the Bills instantly hit back. After Ty Johnson broke loose for a 40-yard catch-and-run, James Cook III burst through a seam to punch in a touchdown from 17 yards out.
No further points were added by either team in the remainder of the first half. Allen threw somewhat of a Hail Mary with 30 seconds remaining, but was picked off by Jaylen Watson. This gave the Rams a glimmer of hope to work their way into field goal range, but they were unable to do so, and Stafford missed Nacua by inches on a Hail Mary attempt of his own to end the half, thus taking a 13-7 deficit into the main break.
Los Angeles gained the upper hand early on in the second half, when they moved swiftly down the field in less than 5 minutes. Thanks to a defensive pass interference call inside the end zone, they were placed on the goalline, allowing Blake Corum to run in the go-ahead score on the ground.
Allen continued struggling to produce anything through the air, with just 4 completions halfway through the third term, but the backup running back in Johnson continued to be his best avenue down the field. They linked up for another explosive play to return to the red zone, and after some flags against both teams prolonged the drive, the star quarterback finally had success connecting with a wide receiver. He found a wide-open Keon Coleman for a touchdown that saw the Bills regain the lead.

As the game had remained within one score either way throughout its entirety, it was only fitting that the Rams scored next. A lethal aerial assault through Tyler Higbee, Corum and Nacua to work down the field briskly saw the latter get on the end of a touchdown from the goalline, as Stafford dropped it in the bucket for him on a perfect fade. A failed 2-point conversion meant the game remained on a knife’s edge, as Buffalo regained possession trailing by just a single point.
Both offense had well and truly gotten going by now, and that was further emphasised when the Bills put together 3 consecutive of 15+ yards, first on the ground through Cook III and Allen’s legs, then on a screen play to Ray Davis, who wasn’t downed until he was just a couple of yards short of a touchdown. Joe Brady did not overcomplicate it from there, going straight to the sneak play that has been so fruitful in recent years. Allen plowed into the end zone and followed it up with a successful 2-pointer to Dalton Kincaid, giving the visitors a 7-point upper-hand, though plenty of time remained.
The chaos was far from over. The Rams made it a 4th consecutive touchdown drive between the teams when Adams did yet again what he has made a career of and scored another touchdown inside the red zone. Continuing to go blow-for-blow, Cook III then had a double on the night himself, running a touchdown in from 5 yards out with under 2 minutes to play, restoring Buffalo’s lead of one converted touchdown, and putting the ball back in Stafford and Los Angeles offense’s hands for the game-deciding drive.
Using every second available, the veteran quarterback found his most reliable targets in Adams and Nacua to march down the field, before Kyren Williams got the call with 8 seconds left to dive into the end zone, tie the game, and send it to overtime for the 3rd time across the league this weekend.
The Bills took first possession, and immediately threatened to put maximum damage on the scoreboard when Khalil Shakir broke free for 57 yards. But on the very next play, their joy was eradicated when Cook III fumbled a carry up the middle, which was recovered for the Rams by none other than Aaron Donald.
Needing any sort of points to win the game, a pair of 21-yard completions from Stafford to Davis Allen and Nacua meant Mevis was in range to attempt a walk-off winner. Despite a perfect operation, his kick was blocked by Greg Rousseau and it fell short, handing the ball back to Allen and providing yet another twist in the game of the season to-date.
With a short field, Allen’s ability to run the ball himself proved decisive, as he set up a 45-yarder for Bass by rushing for 32 yards on consecutive plays. Buffalo’s kicker made no mistake, walking off a topsy-turvy game that had everything as the Bills claimed an incredibly hard-fought victory on the road in a potential Super Bowl preview.
The Rams certainly lost no admirers, and their offense may have even looked as good as it has all season in the second half. But another brutal defeat does put them behind the 8-ball at 2-3, especially in a stacked NFC West.
