Raiders rally from behind to edge out Jets

The New York Jets welcomed the Las Vegas Raiders to MetLife Stadium on Sunday in an important clash for two sides looking to turn around disappointing campaigns. The Raiders entered the contest on a 4-game losing streak, desperate to get their season back on track and move to .500.

Meanwhile, the Jets were hoping to take advantage of home-field advantage after an inconsistent start had left them sitting at 2-5. Green shoots had been evident for New York, but they simply hadn’t converted them into wins. With both teams needing a victory to keep their season ambitions alive, the stage was set for an intriguing AFC encounter.

New York made an encouraging start, with Geno Smith immediately finding Garrett Wilson for a 31-yard completion on the opening play. The Jets moved into scoring territory before Jason Sanders converted a 21-yard field goal to put the hosts ahead.

Las Vegas responded impressively, however, as Kirk Cousins connected with Brock Bowers for a 12-yard touchdown to cap a 10-play opening drive and give the Raiders a 7-3 advantage.

Sanders added another field goal from 36 yards as the Jets continued moving the ball effectively, before New York finally found the end zone for the first time midway through the second quarter. Smith located Isaiah Williams for an 18-yard touchdown, completing an 8-play drive and wrenching back the lead.

That change in scoreboard ascendancy lasted only a matter of seconds, however. Las Vegas responded in spectacular fashion on the ensuing kickoff. Dylan Laube produced one of the afternoon’s defining moments, returning the ball 95 yards down the left sideline for a spectacular touchdown.

The Jets refused to let the setback derail their positive momentum. Smith found Adonai Mitchell for a 12-yard touchdown, with the wide receiver continuing to cause problems for the Raiders’ secondary.

Sanders added a 39-yard field goal just before halftime, sending New York into the break with a 23-14 advantage. The Jets had scored on every possession of the opening half, while Braelon Allen had already accumulated 121 rushing yards.

Las Vegas needed a response after the restart and once again turned to its most reliable offensive weapons. Cousins found Bowers for his second touchdown of the afternoon, connecting with the tight end from two yards out to bring the Raiders within two points. However, New York immediately responded, with Allen breaking free for a 21-yard touchdown run to restore the Jets’ 9-point advantage at 30-21.

The visitors refused to go away, and Cousins continued to find ways through the New York defense. Following a sustained drive, the quarterback finished the possession himself, powering over the goal line from one yard out to reduce the deficit to 30-28. The Raiders’ defense subsequently forced the Jets into their first punt of the afternoon, providing another opportunity to take control.

Cousins capitalised, orchestrating an impressive 9-play, 84-yard drive that culminated in a two-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Nailor. The connection gave Las Vegas its first lead since the opening quarter, putting the Raiders ahead 35-30 with just over 11 minutes remaining.

New York attempted to respond, with Smith finding Mitchell for a 47-yard completion that brought the Jets into the red zone. However, the hosts were unable to find the end zone, settling for a 31-yard Sanders field goal to reduce the deficit to 35-33.

With just over 4 minutes remaining, Matt Gay stepped up for Las Vegas, converting a crucial 53-yard field goal to restore the five-point advantage. The Jets had one final opportunity to snatch victory, but Smith’s desperate attempt towards the end zone was intercepted by Jeremy Chinn with just seven seconds remaining, sealing a remarkable comeback for the visitors.

Cousins finished with 247 passing yards, 3 touchdown passes and a rare rushing score, while Bowers recorded 7 receptions for 92 yards and a couple of touchdowns. For New York, Allen enjoyed an outstanding afternoon with 147 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Mitchell contributed a career-high 142 receiving yards and a score. Despite accumulating 439 total yards, the Jets were ultimately undone by their inability to convert their offensive production into enough touchdowns.

Las Vegas secured a thrilling 38-33 victory, snapping its 4-game losing streak and moving back to .500 at 4-4. Meanwhile, the Jets suffered their third consecutive defeat, falling to 2-6 after surrendering a 9-point halftime advantage in front of their home crowd.
