Lions’ offense roars in destruction of Cardinals

Having been outplayed in Carolina on primetime by the Panthers last week, the Detroit Lions headed to Arizona to take on the Cardinals, looking for a response to keep them in the hunt for the NFC North title. Their star running back, Jahmyr Gibbs, had gotten off to a historic start to the season and was every chance to continue that against the reeling Cardinals.

Detroit made a slow start offensively despite their talent, punting on each of its first 3 possessions as Arizona’s defence managed to get pressure on Jared Goff. The Cardinals, meanwhile, capitalised on their opening opportunity with an impressive 14-play drive. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett connected with Kendrick Bourne for a mammoth gain before Arizona kept the possession alive with a trick play on 4th and 1. Brissett then found an unlikely target in tight end Teagan Quitoriano for a short touchdown, giving the hosts an unlikely early lead.

The Lions continued to struggle early, but their defence began to turn the tide by forcing Arizona into consecutive 3-and-outs. A 22-yard punt return from Tom Kennedy briefly offered Detroit a spark, although the offence could not capitalise. Kennedy later suffered a knee injury following another return and was carted off the field.

Detroit finally clicked into gear and found their breakthrough in the second quarter. Facing 4th and 3 near midfield, Goff found Sam LaPorta for a contested catch. Gibbs then burst for 16 yards to put the Lions within striking distance before finishing the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to level the contest at 7 apiece.

The momentum had shifted decisively. A strong punt return from Amon-Ra St. Brown put Detroit in favourable territory, and after LaPorta helped move the offense into position, the tight end caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Goff on 4th and 1. The Lions had their first lead all of a sudden.

Arizona’s offence continued to stall, and Detroit made the most of another opportunity. Gibbs contributed as both a runner and receiver before Goff connected with Jameson Williams for an 8-yard touchdown. Detroit had scored a hattrick of unanswered touchdowns to take a 21-7 advantage.

The Cardinals’ struggles got bigger and bigger as Detroit’s defensive pressure forced another punt. The Lions added to their lead shortly before halftime, with Jake Bates converting a 46-yard field goal to make it 24-7. Arizona attempted to respond before the break, but DJ Wonnum recorded another sack, and rookie cornerback Keith Abney II intercepted Brissett’s deep pass to end the half on a high for Detroit.

The Lions carried that momentum into the third quarter. Arizona briefly threatened after Brissett found Elijah Higgins for a 38-yard gain, but Detroit’s defense recovered, and Chad Ryland missed a 53-yard field goal attempt. Detroit also picked up where they left off offensively. Goff launched a 39-yard touchdown pass to Williams, his second score of the afternoon, extending the advantage to to an unassailable 24 points.

Arizona finally managed to respond when Brissett found Quitoriano again for a 13-yard touchdown.. Detroit had all the answers yet again, however, as Goff found St. Brown for a 36-yard gain before Gibbs broke free for 22 yards to the Cardinals’ 2-yard line. After struggling to finish the drive, Goff plunged into the end zone himself on 4thdown for an incredibly rare score, restoring Detroit’s 24-point cushion.

The Cardinals attempted to make the contest more competitive in the fourth quarter, but Detroit’s defense stood firm in a much improved showing from last week. Even after a couple of penalties gave Arizona extra territory, Aidan Hutchinson sacked Brissett on 4th down to end the drive.

Detroit continued to lean on Gibbs and its running game to run down the clock. A series of powerful carries moved the Lions downfield, while Goff connected with LaPorta and St. Brown to sustain the possession. Gibbs eventually powered into the end zone for his second rushing touchdown of the game, putting Detroit ahead 45-14.

Arizona added a late consolation score through an impressive touchdown catch from Trey McBride, but it did little to change the outcome. Detroit had scored on seven consecutive possessions after its early struggles, securing a convincing 45-21 win and heading into its bye week with renewed confidence.

The Lions took care of business and then some with this performance. There’s been no doubts over their offensive talent and execution, but the defense appeared to take a step forward with today’s efforts, albeit against the Cardinals, who are tiers below the teams Detroit will have to worry about if they are to make some noise in the playoffs.
