Jets prevail over Browns in testing conditions
New York overcame brutal rain to claim a win over Cleveland at home.
The Cleveland Browns and New York Jets arrived at a rainy MetLife Stadium on Sunday with plenty at stake, as Cleveland looked to extend a three-game winning streak while New York desperately sought to halt a run of consecutive defeats. The Browns had recovered from a horror start to the 2026 campaign to move into rare winning territory.
Despite their 1-3 record, the Jets entered the contest having shown green shoots but were nonetheless under pressure to deliver a strong showing in front of their home supporters. With both teams hoping to build momentum in the AFC, the conditions in East Rutherford would provide an additional challenge, with persistent rain throughout the afternoon.
The hosts began brightly, despite the conditions, moving 80 yards downfield on their opening possession in just 8 plays. Quarterback Geno Smith found Garrett Wilson for a 32-yard touchdown, with the receiver spinning away from a defender before breaking into open space to give New York a hot start.
Cleveland responded with a pair of field goals from Andre Szmyt, as they began to eat into the deficit, who converted from 25 yards in the first quarter and 41 yards in the second. The Browns’ defense also began to make its presence felt, applying consistent pressure on Smith and forcing the Jets into a series of 5 consective punts across the first 3 quarters.

Neither offense managed to find the end zone again before halftime, with the rain making clean execution increasingly difficult for a couple of teams who were already below league-average offensively. Cleveland went into the break trailing by a single point at 7-6, but the Browns had reason to believe they could take control if their defense continued to disrupt Smith.
The third quarter brought more of the same, with both sides struggling to produce meaningful scoring opportunities. Cleveland linebacker Quincy Williams forced a fumble by tight end Kenyon Sadiq, allowing the visitors to regain possession and prevent New York from extending their advantage. However, the Browns were unable to turn the turnover into points, and the contest remained finely balanced heading into the final period.
The Jets finally added to their tally early in the fourth quarter, with Jason Sanders converting a 54-yard field goal to extend the lead to 4 points. Cleveland continued to struggle offensively, with Deshaun Watson facing relentless pressure from New York’s defensive front and finding little time to locate his receivers.
However, the Browns finally produced their breakthrough with just over 6 minutes remaining. Watson took matters into his own hands to escape pressure and scramble for a 20-yard gain to move Cleveland into scoring range, and then followed it up by delivering a 29-yard touchdown pass to rookie receiver Denzel Boston down the left sideline. Szmyt missed the ensuing extra point, leaving the Browns ahead by just 2 points.

New York’s response proved decisive, although it required a significant stroke of fortune. Smith was initially sacked and stripped by Carson Schwesinger, giving the Browns a golden opportunity to run down the clock on the ground. But just 21 seconds of game time later, 4th down was brought up and Cleveland appeared set to punt the ball away with just over 4 minutes remaining, when a high snap slipped through the hands of punter Corey Bojorquez. The loose ball bounced into Jets territory, where New York recovered at the Browns’ 23-yard line.
Just 3 plays later, running back Braelon Allen broke through the left side of the defense and sprinted 22 yards into the end zone for the go-ahead score, turning a special-teams mishap into the game’s defining moment.
Cleveland had one final opportunity to respond, but New York’s defense refused to give ground. Watson struggled to find an opening as the Jets continued to bring pressure, and Will McDonald IV delivered a strip-sack on fourth down, recovering the loose ball to end the Browns’ comeback hopes.
A hard-fought victory for New York gave Jets fans plenty to be proud of, as Allen finished the afternoon with 116 rushing yards and the decisive touchdown. Smith passed for 182 yards and a score, while Wilson recorded 7 receptions for 104 yards. For Cleveland, Watson threw for 155 yards and a touchdown, but a whopping 8 sacks and a costly late mistake proved too much to overcome.
After wins against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Carolina Panthers, both of whom look formiddable, a loss to the lowly Jets will feel like a dagger for Browns fans, who endured their team letting a potential 4-1 start to the season slip.
