Another Broncos comeback sees Chargers fall to 0-5

In desperate need of a win to get the ball rolling in 2026, the Los Angeles Chargers returned home to host their AFC West rivals, the Denver Broncos, for whom this game was just as important. While the Chargers’ struggles had been rightfully well-documented, the Broncos hadn’t gotten off to a great start either, sitting at 2-2 but only due to some late-game heroics in both their wins.

The Broncos made the perfect start after forcing an early turnover. Tight end Charlie Kolar fumbled on the opening possession, with Denver safety Brandon Jones recovering at the Chargers’ 40-yard line. The visitors took advantage of the excellent field position, with running back JK Dobbins powering into the end zone from a couple of yards out to give Denver an early advantage and Los Angeles a nightmare beginning.

Both offenses failed to establish consistency as the first quarter progressed. Denver’s defense applied pressure on Justin Herbert, and the Chargers found little room to operate against a disciplined Broncos unit. Los Angeles eventually got on the scoreboard in the second quarter, with kicker Cameron Dicker converting a 42-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3.

Denver responded with a scoring drive of its own, although the Chargers defence prevented another touchdown. Wil Lutz split the uprights from 34 yards, as they carried a 7-point lead they carried into half-time. The opening two quarters had been a frustrating affair for the home side, who had shown no improvement from their first month of football.

The Chargers had no choice but to emerge from the interval with considerably more energy. Herbert began to find opportunities on the ground as well as through the air, and a long possession finally brought the breakthrough they needed. After converting several third downs, including a 23-yard run from Herbert, the quarterback connected with tight end Hayden Rucci for a 7-yard touchdown, his first in the NFL, coming at a crucial moment for the fate of his team’s season.

Late in the third quarter, Denver quarterback Bo Nix was stripped of the ball by Chargers defensive lineman Tuli Tuipulotu, who also recovered the fumble to give his offense possession at the Broncos’ 42-yard line. The Chargers needed just a single play to capitalise, as Kimani Vidal broke loose and raced for 42 yards into the end zone. Dicker added the extra point, giving Los Angeles a 17-10 lead heading into the final quarter. For the first time this season, the home team had generated a spark and something to be excited about.

Denver had an opportunity to respond immediately after Marvin Mims Jr. returned a punt 27 yards to the Chargers’ 27-yard line. However, the Broncos managed just 3 yards before Lutz missed a 42-yard field-goal attempt, allowing the home side to strengthen its position.

But the turning point came when Los Angeles faced 4th and 1 early in the fourth quarter. Rather than extending the drive, Herbert was stopped short, handing possession back to Denver. Nix and the offense took advantage, with the quarterback finding Courtland Sutton for a 5-yard touchdown to bring the score level at 17-17 with 9 minutes to play.

The Chargers’ collapse continued on their next possession. Herbert was sacked by Broncos defensive lineman Zach Allen, who forced a fumble that linebacker Que Robinson recovered at the Los Angeles 23-yard line. Denver could not find the end zone, but Lutz converted a 19-yard field goal to put the visitors ahead 20-17 and the hosts well and truly on the back foot.

Herbert then had an opportunity to lead a response, but another costly mistake effectively ended the Chargers’ hopes. Facing another 4th down, the quarterback’s pass was intercepted by safety Brandon Jones. They were forced into a field goal with a minute remaining and Lutz made no mistake from 37 yards.

The Chargers had one final possession, but there was no reason to believe Denver’s defense would yield. Herbert led his team across midfield, but was sacked on the final play of regulation, sealing yet another remarkable turnaround for the visitors. After trailing by 7 points entering the final term, the Broncos forced 3 crucial turnovers and scored 13 unanswered points to secure the win.

The result lifted Denver to 3-2, while the Chargers fell to 0-5 for the first time since 2003, a record from which no team in NFL history has ever made the playoffs. Despite showing signs of life after half-time, Los Angeles was again left to rue costly mistakes that turned a promising performance into another painful defeat.
