Cowboys offense explodes against helpless Eagles

Despite lackluster starts to 2026 for both the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, one of the NFL’s most famous rivalries still had its usual level of intrigue when the teams met at Lincoln Financial Field on primetime.

The Eagles came in with what felt like an endless injury list, headlined by Jalen Hurts and DeVonta Smith, but did welcome back star running back Saquon Barkley from a hamstring injury. On the other hand, Dallas had a reasonably clean bill of health but had failed to fire in recent weeks, dropping winnable games.

The spotlight was on Tanner McKee to lift Philadelphia’s offense in Hurts’ absence, and he got off to the perfect start after the Cowboys began proceedings with a field goal. Working mostly on the ground, the Eagles romped down the field, and Barkley punched in a touchdown, igniting the home crowd.

Having scored just 29 points in the last 2 weeks combined, Dak Prescott and his unit needed desperately to return to form, and they generated a strong early connection. They used their own run game in JaVonte Williams and Tyler Goodson to reach the red zone, before CeeDee Lamb hauled in a touchdown catch to wrench back the lead.

As it has for years, a combination of ill-discipline and costly mistakes hindered Dallas defense, handing the Eagles a number of first downs by penalty, and the second touchdown of the night for Philadelphia in as many drives when Dameon Pierce plowed into the end zone.

The back-and-forth offensive affair continued. Prescott targeted Eagles cornerback Riq Woolen with intent, finding Lamb and George Pickens a number of times. In the back zone, Pickens made a tremendous toe-drag catch for a 21-yard score, as a perfect through from the quarterback gave him no choice but to catch it.

Philadelphia’s offensive momentum came to a halt before halftime when they were forced into a couple of quick punts, and the Cowboys were able to extend their halftime lead to 20-14 with a field goal by Brandon Aubrey as time expired.

Despite Barkley being on a limited snap count, McKee and the Eagles offense continued to make the most of what they had. Pierce assumed the bulk of the backfield responsibility, while rookie Makai Lemon became a focal point in the passing game in the absence of Smith. A 17-play drive to open the third quarter took over 9 minutes but culminated in Lemon’s first touchdown in the NFL – the game’s sixth lead change.

However, Prescott kept picking apart the defense, who surprisingly also had little answer for Goodson and Williams. Less than a minute later, after a drop, Lamb found himself scoring his second touchdown of the night. As impressive as Philadelphia had been to that point without many key players, Dallas’ talent seemed to be taking over the game at last.

The Cowboys’ defense started to match the output of their offense, bringing down McKee late in the third period for the first sack of the game, forcing a 3-and-out.

Aubrey’s perfect night continued with a 24-yard chip shot to open up the first 2-score lead of the night for either team, putting the pressure on the inexperienced Eagles quarterback to produce some magic with under 9 minutes remaining.

The biggest play of the night came when DeMarvion Overshown stepped in front of Dallas Goedert to claim an athletic interception, stalling a promising drive and earning back possession for Dallas, leaving them on the cusp of victory if they could manage the clock effectively from there on out.

Although they didn’t manage points on their ensuing drive, it appeared as though the 31 they had already posted would be a winning total. The Eagles turned the ball over on downs deep in their own territory, setting up Williams to punctuate his dominant night with a touchdown, as the Cowboys walked out of enemy territory with a 38-21 win.

Philadelphia’s effort on the night was honourable, particularly on the offensive side without such a high level of talent, but they ultimately could not keep up with the talent of Dallas. The Eagles’ defense has rarely put up a bad performance since the arrival of Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator, but tonight was one of them. Williams ran riot all night, which opened up Prescott to get the best out of Lamb and Pickens through the air.
