Lions walk Packers off in NFC North showdown
A last-gasp field goal from Jake Bates was the difference between Detroit and Green Bay.
Ford Field set the scene for the Detroit Lions to host the Green Bay Packers in a crucial NFC North clash, with both teams looking to strengthen their position in a competitive division. Green Bay entered the contest at 4-2, riding a three-game winning streak, while Detroit sat at 3-2 and was looking to build momentum after an inconsistent start to the season.
Detroit made the most of their early opportunities, with Jared Goff quickly moving the Lions downfield. A deep completion to Amon-Ra St. Brown helped set up the opening score, before Goff connected with Jameson Williams on a 16-yard touchdown pass.
Green Bay responded impressively. Jordan Love found Tucker Kraft for a 14-yard touchdown, capping off a drive in which the quarterback made several important completions to keep the Packers moving, setting the tone for an evenly matched opening quarter.
The Lions continued to threaten through the air, with St. Brown proving a particularly difficult matchup for the Green Bay secondary. However, Detroit had to settle for a field goal when Jake Bates converted from 40 yards in the second quarter, giving the home side a narrow 10-7 advantage.

Green Bay had an opportunity to respond before halftime but was unable to capitalise. Trey Smack missed a field-goal attempt of his own after the Packers’ drive had stalled, leaving the visitors trailing by 3 at the break.
The Packers emerged from halftime determined to turn the contest in their favour. After a fumble by Goff gave Green Bay an opportunity, Love took advantage by connecting with the returning Josh Jacobs for a 25-yard touchdown reception. Smack converted the extra point, putting the Packers ahead 14-10.
The touchdown was an important moment for Jacobs, who was making his season debut after being removed from the commissioner’s exempt list. The running back made an immediate impact, contributing both as a receiver and on the ground.
Detroit responded on the ensuing possession. Goff once again found Williams, this time for a 10-yard touchdown, as the pair connected for their second score of the afternoon, restoring the Lions’ lead.
Both teams had opportunities to extend their advantage, but mistakes and missed chances kept the game close. Detroit failed to convert on fourth down deep in Green Bay territory late in the third quarter, while the Packers continued to struggle to finish drives with touchdowns.
Green Bay eventually levelled the contest in the fourth quarter, with Smack converting a 43-yard field goal to make it 17 apiece. The pressure was now on both offenses to produce a decisive score, and the game appeared destined to come down to the final possession.
Detroit had an opportunity to take control but made a bold decision to go for it on 4th down from its own 24-yard line with just under 5 minutes remaining. Jahmyr Gibbs was stopped short, handing the Packers a chance to seize the initiative.
Green Bay could not capitalise on the turnover, as Love’s pass intended for Jacobs fell incomplete in the end zone. Smack then missed a 35-yard field goal after DJ Wonnum got a hand on the kick, allowing Detroit to take over with another chance to win.

With time running out, Goff found Sam LaPorta for an 18-yard gain, and a late-hit penalty against Karl Brooks moved the Lions further into Green Bay territory. Gibbs then broke free for a 15-yard run, while another penalty against Brooks gave Detroit a crucial first down at the Packers’ 15-yard line.
Rather than risk a turnover, Gibbs went down on the following plays, allowing the Lions to set up their kicker. Bates stepped forward and calmly converted a 22-yard field goal as time expired, sending Ford Field into a frenzy and securing a dramatic 20-17 victory.
The result ended Green Bay’s 3-game winning streak and gave Detroit its second consecutive win with a bye in between them. In a contest defined by missed opportunities, costly penalties and a tense finish, the Lions found a way to prevail when it mattered most.
