Seahawks’ defense shines as Chiefs suffer first loss
Seattle handed Kansas City their first loss of 2026 on Sunday Night Football.
On Sunday Night Football, the Kansas City Chiefs traveled to Lumen Field to face the Seattle Seahawks in a Sunday Night Football matchup, looking to extend their unbeaten start to the season and maintain their position among the AFC’s leading contenders. Kansas City entered the contest unbeaten at 5-0, while Seattle stood at 3-3 after a difficult start to its campaign.
The matchup represented Kenneth Walker III’s return to Seattle, having won the most recent Super Bowl MVP as a member of the Seahawks. With Patrick Mahomes leading the Chiefs against Sam Darnold and Seattle’s explosive receiving corps, the home side faced a significant challenge against one of the league’s strongest teams in the likely game of the week.
The opening quarter proved to be a defensive battle, with neither offense able to turn its early possessions into points. Mahomes struggled to find consistent room against Seattle’s pass rush, while the Seahawks were forced to work hard for every yard against the ever-disciplined Kansas City defense.
Seattle began to find its rhythm as the first quarter progressed, with Darnold looking increasingly towards Jaxon Smith-Njigba. The star wide receiver created separation downfield and helped the Seahawks move into scoring territory, although the home side was unable to finish the drive with a touchdown.

The deadlock was, however, broken in the second quarter. After a lengthy drive that took Seattle deep into Kansas City territory, Jason Myers converted a 25-yard field goal to put the Seahawks ahead 3-0.
The Chiefs struggled to respond. Mahomes threw an interception to safety Ty Okada, giving Seattle another opportunity to extend its lead. Kansas City’s defense initially limited the damage, but the Seahawks continued to move the ball effectively, with Smith-Njigba proving particularly difficult to contain.
Seattle capitalised late in the first half. Darnold found Smith-Njigba for a 28-yard touchdown, with the receiver securing the ball despite close coverage from rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane. Myers converted the extra point, giving the Seahawks a 10-0 lead with under 2 minutes remaining before halftime.
Kansas City had a chance to get on the scoreboard before the break, but the opportunity slipped away. Darnold threw an interception to cornerback Nazeeh Johnson near the goal line, allowing the Chiefs to take possession with a chance to respond. However, Harrison Butker’s 58-yard field-goal attempt fell short, leaving Kansas City scoreless at the main interval.
Seattle continued to dictate the contest after the restart. The Seahawks put together another productive drive, with Darnold connecting with his receivers and using his mobility to keep the possession alive. The drive reached the Kansas City 6-yard line, but the Chiefs stiffened near the end zone, forcing Seattle to settle for another field goal and keeping the visitors in the game.
Myers converted from 35 yards to extend the lead to 13 points, giving the Seahawks further breathing room midway through the third quarter.

The Chiefs finally responded on the scoreboard. Mahomes and the Kansas City offense moved into field-goal range, and Butker converted from 50 yards to get the visitors on the board at 13-3.
As the third quarter drew to a close, Kansas City’s defense continued to keep the margin within reach, but the team’s first possession of the final quarter consumed over 5 minutes yet saw them come away with nothing to show for it, as Butker missed a second field goal on the night.
Having regained the football, Seattle’s priority was purely to chew the clock, and they executed their intentions to perfection. A combination of runs and short passes saw the remaining time dwindle down inside 4 minutes, before Emmanuel Wilson put the finishing touches on a strong performance, bursting through a seam for 21 yards and the game-sealing touchdown, capping off a 20-3 victory.
The Seahawks’ defense returned to its brilliant best and the form that ultimately headlined the Super Bowl LX victory. They held their former teammate, Walker III, to just 57 yards from scrimmage on the night, and gave Mahomes no room to breathe all night. With the San Francisco 49ers enduring their first loss on Sunday afternoon, the door is right back open for Seattle to return to the top of the NFC West.
