Buccaneers run riot in demolition of Panthers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers visited Bank of America Stadium to take on the Carolina Panthers for an NFC South showdown in Week 7. Tampa Bay entered the contest with a disappointing 1-5 record after an overtime defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers, while Carolina looked to build on consecutive victories over the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles.

Tampa Bay were able to establish control from the outset, with running back Bucky Irving leading the charge on the ground. The Buccaneers found success running the ball through Carolina’s defense, with Irving, who scored the game’s opening touchdown, proving particularly difficult to contain as the visitors dictated the early tempo.

The Buccaneers began to exploit Carolina’s mistakes on all 3 units. Wide receiver David Moore muffed a punt, allowing Ko Kieft to recover the ball for Tampa Bay at the Panthers’ 18-yard line. Although the Buccaneers were unable to reach the end zone on the ensuing possession, Chase McLaughlin converted a 22-yard field goal to extend their lead.

Carolina’s afternoon quickly unravelled as Bryce Young came under heavy pressure. The Panthers struggled to maintain possession, and a strip-sack from Al-Quadin Muhammad proved particularly costly. Defensive tackle Calijah Kancey recovered the loose ball and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown, handing Tampa Bay a significant advantage and further energising the visitors’ defense.

Carolina briefly found a spark through the passing game, with Young connecting with tight end Darren Waller for a 50-yard touchdown reception. The explosive play offered the Panthers a rare moment of encouragement, but their attempts to narrow the deficit were immediately undermined when Ryan Fitzgerald’s extra-point attempt was blocked by Tykee Smith. Zyon McCollum then returned the ball for a defensive 2-point conversion, ensuring Tampa Bay conceded minimal ground on the scoreboard despite Waller’s touchdown.

The Buccaneers continued their impressive first-half display through Irving, who found the end zone a second time to underline his dominance, while Carolina struggled to find answers against a defense that was increasingly prominent in its ability to disrupt Young.

Mayfield added to the damage late in the first half, connecting with rookie wide receiver Tez Johnson for an 18-yard touchdown with just 4 seconds remaining. The scoring play capped off a disastrous opening half for Carolina, who went into the main interval trailing 33-6.

The second half brought no change in the home team’s fortunes. Tampa Bay continued to apply pressure on Young, with linebacker YaYa Diaby recording consecutive sacks on back-to-back plays. The Buccaneers’ defensive front repeatedly disrupted Carolina’s passing attack, preventing the Panthers from establishing any sustained momentum and keeping the home side firmly on the back foot.

Vita Vea added another sack to Tampa Bay’s defensive performance, bringing the team’s total to 5 as the Buccaneers continued to dominate the line of scrimmage. Young was unable to find a consistent answer to the pressure, and another turnover arrived when Smith intercepted a pass from Carolina’s quarterback.

McLaughlin then added a 44-yard field goal to extend Tampa Bay’s advantage to 36-6 by the end of the third quarter. The kick was his 16th consecutive made field goal, continuing an impressive run of form for the Buccaneers kicker. With the visitors holding a 30-point advantage and Carolina struggling to generate meaningful offense, the result was beyond doubt.

Sean Tucker and Anthony Tyus II traded touchdowns in the final period for their respective teams, but Tampa Bay had already begun celebrating a monstrous 43-13 victory on the road.

The victory provided Tampa Bay with a much-needed response after its difficult start to the season to keep their hopes of winning the division alive. Contributions across all three phases showed the team’s potential when operating effectively. Despite only throwing for 61 passing yards, Mayfield’s return to the lineup gave the Panthers’ something to worry about through the air, which opened up the run game to combine for 261 yards on the ground.
