Bengals score 35 unanswered in destruction of Ravens

The Cincinnati Bengals travelled to Baltimore for a crucial AFC North clash, looking to build momentum after a bye week and improve their 3-2 record. The Ravens entered at 4-2, hoping to bounce back from a narrow defeat to the Cleveland Browns and keep pace in a tightly contested division. Baltimore were without star quarterback Lamar Jackson for a third consecutive game due to an ankle injury, leaving Tyler Huntley to lead the offense.

The Ravens made a flying start, taking the lead on their opening possession. With Huntley stepping in for the injured Lamar Jackson, Baltimore moved quickly downfield before Zay Flowers turned a short pass into a spectacular 48-yard touchdown. Flowers found space after the catch and raced into the end zone, giving the home side the early advantage.

Cincinnati struggled significantly in their attempts to respond. Burrow and the Bengals managed a couple of first downs but could not sustain a scoring drive, while Baltimore’s defense kept Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins quiet. The Ravens controlled possession for much of the first half, repeatedly moving the chains and forcing Cincinnati to spend long periods defending.

Baltimore extended its advantage in the second quarter, although its lengthy drives produced field goals rather than touchdowns. Tyler Loop converted from 34 yards, before adding another from 24 yards just before half-time. Despite spending more than 22 minutes with the ball in the opening half, the Ravens went into the locker room leading only by 13 points, leaving the door open for a Bengals comeback, although massive offensive improvement would be needed.

That opportunity became apparent immediately after the break. Cincinnati emerged with renewed purpose, putting together a swift drive on its first possession of the second half. Burrow found tight end Mike Gesicki for a 6-yard touchdown, and Evan McPherson’s extra point cut the deficit to 13-7.

The Bengals’ defense then forced a quick Baltimore punt, giving Burrow another opportunity to attack. He took full advantage, connecting with Higgins for a 13-yard touchdown to cap a 47-yard drive. McPherson’s kick put Cincinnati ahead 14-13, completing the turnaround in less than a quarter after the Bengals had failed to score before half-time.

Baltimore had a chance to regain control early in the fourth quarter. Facing 4th and 2 at the Cincinnati 12-yard line, the Ravens elected to go for it rather than settle for a field goal. Huntley’s pass towards tight end Josh Cuevas fell incomplete, however, and the Bengals took over on downs.

Cincinnati punished the mistake with a decisive scoring drive. Burrow connected with Higgins for a huge 44-yard gain, helping the visitors move deep into Baltimore territory. Samaje Perine then finished the possession with a rushing touchdown from the goal line, extending the Bengals’ lead to 21-13 with just over 11 minutes remaining.

The Ravens’ hopes of a comeback of their own perished in the blink of an eye. Burrow continued to find space in the secondary, with Chase contributing a 30-yard reception and Higgins adding another 43-yard gain to put Cincinnati in position to score again. Burrow eventually found Chase for a 2-yard touchdown, stretching the lead to 28-13.

Baltimore’s next possession brought another costly mistake. Huntley’s pass was deflected, allowing Bengals linebacker Demetrius Knight to intercept the ball and return it to the Ravens’ 24-yard line. Cincinnati needed little time to capitalise, with Burrow throwing a 16-yard touchdown pass to Drew Sample to make it 35-13.

The Bengals had scored touchdowns on 5 consecutive second-half possessions, transforming a 13-point half-time deficit into a 22-point victory. Burrow was replaced late by veteran Joe Flacco as Cincinnati closed out an emphatic win, while Baltimore was left to reflect on another second-half collapse – this time of epic proportions.
