Falcons hand 49ers their first loss

The San Francisco 49ers flew across the country and into Atlanta looking to extend their unbeaten start to the season and strengthen their position among the NFC’s leading contenders. Standing in their way were the inconsistent Falcons, who entered Week 7 at 2-4 and were keen to get their campaign back on track after back-to-back defeats. With Michael Penix Jr. leading the Atlanta offense against a San Francisco side missing several key players, the Falcons faced a difficult challenge at Mercedes-Benz Stadium as they looked to secure their first home victory of the season.

San Francisco made the stronger start, putting together an opening drive that showcased Christian McCaffrey’s importance to the offense. The running back helped move the chains both on the ground and through before powering into the end zone from one yard out to give the 49ers a 7-0 lead.

Atlanta responded with a massive kickoff return from Zachariah Branch, setting the Falcons up in favourable field position. Bijan Robinson helped move them closer, but San Francisco’s defense held firm in the red zone, forcing Nick Folk to settle for a 39-yard field goal.

The 49ers continued to threaten on the ground, with rookie running back Kaelon Black making the most of his opportunities, which increased due to a thigh injury to McCaffrey, which limited his involvement during the first half.

San Francisco extended its lead on the first play of the second quarter when Black broke through the Atlanta defense for a 30-yard rushing touchdown. The extra point made it 14-3, putting the visitors in a strong position heading towards half-time.

The Falcons refused to let the game get away from them. Penix Jr. led a 68-yard scoring drive, eventually finding tight end Nick Muse for a 1-yard touchdown reception – the first score of Muse’s career. Folk’s extra point was unsuccessful, leaving Atlanta trailing by 5 points.

Folk then added a 33-yard field goal as the first half came to a close, reducing the deficit even more. Despite trailing for much of the opening half, Atlanta had gotten themselves right back into the contest and were to receive the second half’s opening kickoff.

The home side carried that momentum into the third quarter. Penix Jr. directed another productive drive, connecting with Drake London to move the Falcons into the red zone before finding tight end Kyle Pitts Sr. for a 5-yard touchdown for Pitts Sr.’s 4th score in 3 weeks, putting Atlanta ahead for the first time.

San Francisco had an opportunity to respond immediately, with McCaffrey returning to the game after his first-half absence. Brock Purdy moved the offense downfield through a series of completions to George Kittle and Jordan Watkins, but the drive ended in disappointment when safety Jessie Bates III intercepted a pass intended for Jacob Cowing.

Looking like a completely different team to the first quarter, Atlanta capitalised on the turnover with a long drive that stretched across the end of the third quarter and into the fourth. Penix Jr. remained composed, and on the opening play of the final period, he connected with London for a 21-yard touchdown.

The 49ers attempted to mount a late comeback. Purdy appeared to find Watkins for a 23-yard touchdown, but a lengthy review overturned the decision, ruling the pass incomplete. The drive ended when Za’Darius Smith sacked Purdy on 4th down, handing possession back to Atlanta.

The Falcons were unable to make the most of their next possession, and a poor punt gave San Francisco another opportunity to get back into the contest. Purdy guided the 49ers downfield and found fullback Kyle Juszczyk for a 1-yard touchdown with just over 5 minutes remaining. However, Eddy Pineiro missed the extra point, leaving San Francisco 6 points behind at 26-20.

Atlanta’s next punt was again unsuccessful, allowing the 49ers to begin their possession near midfield with a chance to take the lead. Yet the Falcons’ defense delivered when it mattered most. Rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels intercepted Purdy with just over 2 minutes remaining, ending San Francisco’s hopes of a comeback.

Folk converted a 31-yard field goal to stretch the lead to 29-20, before Daniels made another decisive play late in the game, recovering a fumble by Kittle to secure possession for Atlanta.

The Falcons held on to complete a 29-20 victory, handing San Francisco its first defeat of the season. Penix Jr.’s three touchdown passes and Atlanta’s ability to capitalise on turnovers proved decisive, while Daniels’ late-game heroics helped the home side close out a statement win.
