Giants emerge victorious against Texans
New York claimed their 4th victory of the season against Houston in overtime.
JJ McCarthy made his starting debut as a member of the New York Giants on Sunday in Houston, with the team looking to build momentum after an up and down beginning to their season, while the Texans hoped to continue their push up the AFC South standings following consecutive victories.
New York entered Week 7 with a 3-2-1 record and made the significant change at quarterback, with McCarthy given the start after Jameis Winston was benched. Houston, meanwhile, entered at 2-4, with CJ Stroud leading an offense looking to find greater consistency. With both sides desperate for a victory, NRG Stadium set the scene for a tighly contested matchup.
Houston made the brighter start, opening the scoring with a 58-yard field goal from Ka’imi Fairbairn after the Texans’ opening drive stalled outside the red zone. New York responded with a productive possession of its own, using a combination of runs and short passes to move into scoring range. Tyrone Tracy Jr. finished the drive by powering into the end zone from 2 yards out, giving the Giants a 7-3 lead.
The Texans struggled to find the end zone during the opening quarter, but Fairbairn continued to provide points. His second long-range field goal, this time from 57 yards, reduced the deficit to 7-6 early in the second quarter.

New York soon restored its four-point advantage through an unlikely source. After McCarthy helped move the Giants downfield, Winston entered the game and took the ball himself into the end zone from a yard out.
Houston needed a response before half-time, and Stroud delivered. The Texans put together an impressive 90-yard drive, navigating several penalties before reaching the Giants’ 6-yard line. Stroud then found his newest teammate, Marvin Harrison Jr., for a touchdown reception – his first as a Texan.
The third quarter proved frustrating for both offenses. Neither team could sustain a drive long enough to reach the end zone, with the Giants’ defense limiting Houston’s ground game and the Texans preventing McCarthy from producing another scoring possession. The quarter ended without points for either, setting up a tense final 15 minutes.
New York finally broke the deadlock early in the fourth quarter. The Giants put together a lengthy drive that consumed the entire opening 6 minutes of the period. Cam Skattebo capped off the possession with a 16-yard touchdown run, finding space through the right side of the line before racing into the end zone.
Houston’s offense had struggled to make progress for much of the second half, but the Texans found their response when they needed it most. Stroud led a game-tying drive, with the home side gradually moving closer to the goal line. Facing 3rd and goal from the 3-yard line, Stroud found Xavier Hutchinson for a short touchdown pass with 52 seconds remaining.

Fairbairn’s extra point tied the game at 21-21, leaving the Giants with little time to respond. McCarthy was unable to produce a decisive drive in the closing seconds, and regulation ended with the teams level, sending the contest into overtime.
Houston received the ball first in the extra period, but the Giants’ defense delivered when it mattered most. The Texans went 3-and-out, failing to gain a single yard on the possession before punting the ball back to New York.
The Giants needed just three plays to settle the contest. McCarthy connected with Malik Nabers for a 9-yard gain before Skattebo broke free for a spectacular 42-yard run, carrying the ball deep into Houston territory and putting the visitors on the brink of victory.
Devin Singletary then took over. The veteran running back burst through the middle of the Texans’ defence and raced 30 yards into the end zone, completing the overtime drive and securing a 27-21 victory for New York.
The win lifted the Giants to 4-2-1 heading into their bye week, while Houston fell to 2-5 despite fighting back to force overtime, and now face an uphill battle in their remaining games to make the playoffs. Skattebo’s explosive running, having been benched last week for poor late-game execution, and Singletary’s decisive finish proved the difference, as New York secured a memorable road victory.
