Last-second heroics see Jaguars edge out Eagles

Running high on emotion following the mid-week retirement of Lane Johnson, as well as being short of many players on both sides of the ball, the Philadelphia Eagles headed across the pond to London to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars to begin the second successive Sunday with a game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Eagles collapsed late to fall to 2-2 with a defeat against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 4, while the Jaguars continued a buoyant start to their campaign with an away win in Cincinnati over the Bengals.

Tempers flaired from the get-go, as a scuffle between Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Bryan Thomas Jr. on the opening kickoff saw both players ejected, while a holding call simultaneously wiped a would-be touchdown off the board for Jacksonville, making for an eventful first 13 seconds.

A strip sack by Jalen Carter combined with some ill-discipline saw Jacksonville face a rare 2nd and 40 situation early, eventuating in a punt shortly after. Philadelphia were unable to capitalise on supreme field position with any points, however, as Will Shipley was stopped a few inches short of the line to gain on 4th down, handing the ball right back to the Jaguars.

It didn’t take long for Trevor Lawrence and his offense to click into gear thereafter. After moving the chains a couple of times, Lawrence found Parker Washington on the move and in plenty of space, allowing him to waltz down the field and into the end zone untouched. The Jaguars bolted out to an early lead in what many thought would be a sign of things to come.

The Eagles’ offense found a response, putting together a 13-play drive and showing significant improvement on 3rd down, in particular, having gone 0-for-12 last week. Will Shipley capped off the possession by tying the game with his first touchdown of 2026.

Things got even better for Philadelphia soon after. Carter’s second sack of the first half helped to regain posession quickly, before Jalen Hurts’ best throw of the season to date found the in-form Darius Cooper in stride as he romped through the defense for a 62-yard catch-and-run touchdown, giving the Eagles an unlikely 14-7 lead, which they held into halftime, thanks to an improbable goalline stand as time expired.

Halfway through the third quarter, Jacksonville reduced the deficit to 4 points with a field goal by Cam Little in their bid to avoid a major upset. Their second fourth down stop of the afternoon followed on the ensuing drive, with Travis Hunter making a brilliant play to break up a pass from Hurts.

But Philadelphia’s defense continued to hold strong, making ferocious tackles and generating pressure on Lawrence, which eventually saw him throw an interception into the hands of Quinyon Mitchell, who enjoyed a stellar performance in the Eagles’ secondary all game.

Continuing to work with limited offensive weaponry, Hurts missed an opportunity to break the game open when he slightly overthrew a wide-open Dontayvion Wicks on 3rd and long. The pass was inches out of Wicks’ reach and fell incomplete, as Philadelphia attempted to cling onto their lead going into the final quarter.

When the Jaguars appeared to be about to break through and take the lead with less than 7 minutes to play, the Eagles’ dogged defense did what it had done all game and came up with another huge 4th down stop inside the red zone. They would be required to come up with another inspirational effort no more than a minute later, after the undermanned offense was forced off the field quickly once again.

The game ultimately came down to a defining play with 3 minutes remaining. Facing yet another 4th down, Lawrence threw a 50-50 ball the way of his hot-handed receiver in Washington, who pulled in a freakish one-handed catch for the go-ahead score against Riq Woolen. Jacksonville had overcome their biggest struggle when it mattered most, but a missed extra point left the door ajar for a rebuttal from Philadelphia.

They got two opportunities to retake the lead, and the second one was the one the Eagles made count. Hurts did just enough right, finding Wicks, Makai Lemon and Dallas Goedert to get into field goal range for Jake Elliott. The veteran kicker was absolutely perfect from 48 yards, leaving just 8 seconds on the clock and surely steering Philadelphia to an improbable underdog victory.

But somehow, someway, the game had one final twist. Ameer Abdullah managed to break loose on the ensuing kickoff, getting into Eagles territory before being downed with a single second remaining. This gave Cam Little the change to definitively win the game for Jacksonville with a buzzer beater, and despite a high snap, he drilled the ball beautifully through the uprights from 57, sending the Jaguars players and fans into a frenzy, securing a crazy 19-17 victory.

Philadelphia will rue that kickoff for the entire week. 59 and 3/4 minutes of hardwork, which gave them every chance to win, despite facing an injury crisis. Questions will be asked as to what exactly went wrong, but for now it is nothing short of a heartbreaking defeat that will sit with them for a while.
